One of the most consistent action franchises in recent years has been the re-booted ‘Equaliser’ trilogy, directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring two-time Academy Award Oscar winner Denzel Washington. The films have grossed over half a billion at the worldwide box office. The films have all also been consistent with critics, with the first film fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with 61%, the second film standing strong with 52% and the 2023 entry with a franchise best 76%. As a big fan of the franchise and the previous two instalments, I was ready for one last ride with Robert McCall.
‘The Equaliser 3’ follows Robert McCall (played by Denzel Washington) as he finds himself at home in Southern Italy but discovers his friends are under the control of local crime bosses. As events turn deadly, McCall knows what he must do, becomes his friends’ protectors as he takes on the mafia. With Denzel reprising his role as McCall and director Antione Fuqua returning behind the camera as well, I was very excited to see this trilogy wrapped up in style and with a satisfying and emotionally resonant ending.
The real strengths of this franchise have been with its star. Denzel Washington is tremendous as Robert McCall, really taking the role and making it his own. He sells the action sequences remarkably well, with director Antione Fuqua knowing exactly how to utilise his star. You really believe McCall as this force to be reckoned with, which is a testament to both the acting and the directing on display. Denzel also sells a lot of the more dramatic sequences. As a two-time Oscar winner, we know he is capable of delivering powerhouse performances from one film to another but his dedication to the craft of acting is a big reason why it resonates so well in this franchise and why the films have been such a massive success.
The story here is also more of a personal one, as we journey to McCall’s home, we really get a sense of finality as things from his past come to the forefront of the story. With his friends involved, there is also a personal element to his motive. The films have done a great job of this in each instalment, ensuring that we really connect to the character and understand why he is involving himself in the situation. Adding these kinds of stakes to the story really allows us to care for his character and what happens to him. This story remains my favourite in the trilogy.
Overall, ‘The Equaliser 3’ was a solid conclusion to an unexpected trilogy. Denzel's still got it as Robert McCall, and Antoine Fuqua once again shows that he is one of the best action director’s working today! This is a must watch for action fans and will make a solid move to put on over the Christmas break.
