PRODUCT REVIEWS

Waking up early, Lucas (Tim Roth) starts his drive to the cemetery, making a quick stop for fuel and a hot coffee along the way. Meanwhile, Edith (Trine Dyrholm) calls her workplace to report that she is unwell at the start of her day and then rides her bike to the cemetery. Lucas arrives first and takes some time to wander around while finishing his coffee. It isn’t long before he encounters Edith. As they begin to talk, it becomes evident that there is an awkward tension between them, hinting at a complicated and tragic past they share. Lucas and Edith find themselves in a difficult situation as they discuss the burial of their only son, who is currently at the cemetery. Although they were once married, it has been over ten years since they last saw each other. As they wait for a key staff member to arrive, Lucas and Edith engage in a deep conversation that reflects on their past, their current circumstances, and their future. "Poison" is a heavy drama film with extensive dialogue that makes viewers feel as if they are watching a stage play come to life. It is directed by Désirée Nosbusch, who has only one previous credit: the 2014 film Succès Fox. As a film, Poison presents a hard-hitting premise and a deep storyline. The main characters' pasts add significant weight to the narrative, especially as they discuss their son. Through the dialogue, we gain a better understanding of the characters, which I found both fulfilling and appreciated. Instead of merely reminiscing about the good old days, the focus primarily remains on the present and the potential outcomes for their future. While the dialogue is excellent and provides valuable insights into the characters, many conversations tend to end similarly, with one character feeling hurt or offended and walking away. The characters then move to a new location, resume the conversation, or engage in a different discussion. If you enjoy drama films featuring only a pair of actors carrying the entire narrative, similar to a stage play, Poison is worth adding to your watchlist. The storyline is quite heavy and dramatic. Although it starts somewhat vague, the transparent dialogue allows viewers to become well-informed and invested in the lives of the two main characters. Visually, the film is impressive, particularly with its primary setting in a quiet cemetery. The performances are outstanding, especially Tim Roth, who delivers a compelling mix of drama and emotion. However, the film does have some disappointments; its structure can feel repetitive, and the finale lacks a significant impact. * This review has been written for Sanity.
