PRODUCT REVIEWS

Sidonie (Isabelle Huppert) is a renowned writer who has been invited to travel to Osaka, Japan, for six days. A Japanese publisher plans to republish Sidonie’s first book, and she will have the opportunity to sign copies for her long-time fans and participate in press interviews. Although she accepts the invitation and begins to pack her bags, it becomes clear at the airport that Sidonie is having second thoughts. Something seems to be holding her back—a deeper issue that extends beyond the lengthy eleven-hour flight. Thankfully, a stranger at the counter reassures her that the trip will be worthwhile. After arriving in Japan by plane, Sidonie meets a local publisher named Kenzo Mizoguchi (Tsuyoshi Ihara). Kenzo is responsible for Sidonie’s transportation, coordinating various interviews, and ensuring that her time in Japan goes smoothly. He even offers to take Sidonie to visit local attractions, such as a temple and promises never to leave her alone. Throughout her book tour, Sidonie and Kenzo develop an unlikely friendship, engaging in deep discussions about their past and current challenges. Sidonie confides in Kenzo about the loss of her husband, which has hindered her ability to write. While in Japan, she encounters many unfamiliar experiences that may help her move on with her life or keep her trapped in a joyless world. At the same time, she notices strange and unexplainable occurrences in her hotel room, including windows being left open, unusual dreams, and even glimpses of the ghostly presence of her deceased husband. The film Sidonie in Japan is a drama directed by Élise Girard, who is also known for Belleville Tokyo. This movie tells a touching story, revealing Sidonie’s personal struggles, including her mysterious reluctance to travel to Japan, which is not immediately apparent. As the plot unfolds, we gain deeper insight into her character through her interactions with Kenzo, the press interviewers, and her unexplainable visions and dreams. Actress Isabelle Huppert delivers an outstanding performance, and there are many memorable scenes that are both heartfelt and emotional. The visuals are impressive, and it's enjoyable to see Sidonie experiencing new things in Japan. However, the pacing of the film is a significant concern. If you’re in search of a drama film with a heartfelt romance, "Sidonie in Japan" is an excellent choice, offering many unforgettable moments on screen. Isabelle Huppert delivers an impressive performance as she plays a character grappling with personal loss and a series of unexplainable events. The development of her friendship and romance with Kenzo is beautifully portrayed, and the story unfolds gradually as it progresses. However, one major drawback is the film's pacing, which can feel prolonged and drawn out at times. Despite this, the touching finale makes the journey worthwhile. * This review has been written for Sanity.
