Directed by Lynne Ramsay (We Need to Talk About Kevin), with a monumental score from Radioheads Jonny Greenwood, this modern masterwork will break you. Joe (Joaquin Phoenix, Her, Inherent Vice) is a hired gun who rescues trafficked girls, using brutal methods against those responsible. Caring for his elderly mother in his childhood home in New York City, he suffers from graphic flashbacks of his childhood, the abuse he and his mother faced from his violent father, and the brutal past in the military and FBI, and has suicidal thoughts. He embarks on a blood-drenched rescue mission, when Nina (Ekaterina Samsonov), the innocent 13-year-old daughter of an ambitious New York senator, never returns home. But amidst half-baked leads and a desperate desire to shake off the heavy burden of a personal hell, Joe's frenzied plummet into the depths of Tartarus is inevitable, and every step Joe takes to flee the pain, brings him closer to the horrors of insanity.

PRODUCT REVIEWS

Joe, played by Joaquin Phoenix, is a skilled former soldier who works as a private investigator specialising in tracking missing persons. Haunted by the traumas of his dark past, Joe approaches his work with confidence and is unhesitant to use violence when necessary. After he completes a job and collects his payment, he returns home to care for his elderly mother, portrayed by Judith Roberts. After Joe finishes a recent job, a senator from New York asks him to take on a new mission: to find and rescue his 13-year-old daughter, Nina (Ekaterina Samsonov), who may have been captured. Joe accepts the task and begins his mission. However, this mission is his most challenging yet, filled with numerous surprises and revelations. “You Were Never Really Here” is a crime drama that explores profound emotional themes. Lynne Ramsay directed the film, which is also known for her acclaimed works such as “We Need to Talk About Kevin” (2011) and “Ratcatcher” (1999). I enjoyed Joe as a character. He is skilled in many areas but struggles with a troubled past. Despite this, he demonstrates the ability to tackle any task. It appears that Joe engages in various activities to distract himself and keep his mind occupied, which prevents him from dwelling on his inner turmoil and suffering. The film is filled with tension, but to my surprise, it is also beautifully shot. We experience intense action when Joe is on a mission, and the director provides enough context for us to understand what he is doing at each step without revealing every detail. Some scenes are creatively filmed, offering a glimpse into Joe’s mind and thoughts. These sequences can feel dreamlike; while some viewers may find them slow and tedious, others might appreciate the insight into Joe’s world and personal life. I loved the originality of this film. Using different camera angles and the in-depth exploration of Joe’s thoughts helped me better understand the situation and the characters. Ultimately, it is these moments that build the suspense! Overall, I found this film to be surprisingly uplifting. While dark, gritty, and tense as the story unfolds, it also provides a deeper understanding of Joe's thoughts and mindset. The director’s creative details significantly enhance the film’s impact. Many viewers will likely appreciate its originality, although some may look at the time during certain moments. I enjoyed experiencing something new and refreshing, complemented by another strong performance from Joaquin Phoenix. If you haven't seen this film yet, I recommend adding it to your watchlist. * This review has been written for Sanity.
