Some lies never die.

In this gripping crime thriller, Russell Crowe stars as Roy Freeman, an ex-homicide detective with a fractured memory, forced to revisit a case he can't remember. As a man's life hangs in the balance on death row, Freeman must piece together the brutal evidence from a decade-old murder investigation, uncovering a sinister web of buried secrets and betrayals linking to his past. PRODUCT REVIEWS

Loved this movie, you do have to watch it closely, so all the bits come together. I did not see that ending coming.

When Roy Freeman (Russell Crowe) wakes up in the morning, he finds himself in a house filled with notes and illustrations explaining each room. His head is bandaged, and he experiences pain and difficulty recalling aspects of his past. Upon entering his bathroom, he discovers a note reminding him that he has Alzheimer’s. As Roy gets ready for the day, he has faint memories of participating in an experimental procedure involving electrode stimulation of his brain in hopes of developing new pathways and restoring his memories. However, due to Roy’s history of substance abuse, the results of the treatment are unpredictable. Roy receives a phone call from Emily Dietz, who wants to discuss one of his old cases at a local cafe. Roy agrees, but he is suspicious. Emily tells Roy about a man named Isaac Samuel, a convicted criminal facing execution, and requests Roy's help. Roy, who doesn't remember the case, decides to investigate further. He looks through old case files and eventually agrees to meet Samuel. Despite his Alzheimer's, Roy is determined to seek the truth before Samuel's execution and revisit the evidence. "Sleeping Dogs" is a thriller and mystery with a similar vibe to "Memento" (2000). Not only is the murderer’s identity a mystery, but aspects surrounding Roy’s past are also unclear and mysterious. "Sleeping Dogs" is the directorial debut of Adam Cooper, one of the film’s writers. While this is Adam’s first directorial debut, he has multiple writing credits for various past films, including "The Transporter Refueled," "Assassin’s Creed," and "Allegiant." As we've seen in previous films, Russell Crowe once again delivers an enjoyable performance and fully commits to the role. He is by far the most engaging and pleasing aspect of the film. The mystery intrigued me and kept me invested. As Roy travels around and delves deeper into the investigation, the list of suspects grows, and elements of Roy's past become more mysterious. The strange hallucinations that occur in Roy's mind add to the overall mystery. However, although Russell Crowe gives a praiseworthy performance, the rest of the cast's performances are weaker. This is particularly noticeable with actress Karen Gillian as Laura, who appears uncomfortable and unnatural, which I found quite disappointing. Overall, like "Memento" (2000), "Sleeping Dogs" presents a captivating mystery. Once again, Russell Crowe delivers a standout performance, which is the film's highlight. However, I was disappointed by Karen Gillian's performance, finding it unfitting and distracting. Although the pacing starts off well, some subplots and backstories detract from the overall engagement and interest of the story. While the film does provide closure and answers, I couldn't help but feel disappointed by the predictability of these answers. * This review has been written for Sanity.
