Mina (Dakota Fanning), is a young artist who works at a pet store in western Ireland. In addition to her job and her passion for drawing, she enjoys taking on different identities at local bars in pursuit of one-night stands. Mina often receives phone calls from her sister, who is currently trying to reach her to discuss a reunion for the anniversary of their mother’s death. The death of Mina’s mother continues to haunt her for undisclosed reasons. While transporting a rare and beautiful bird to a zoo, Mina's car breaks down, and she becomes lost in a forest. As she searches for help, she experiences unexplainable events, such as her car vanishing. She eventually discovers an unusual house and becomes trapped there with three strangers. In the surrounding forest, mysterious creatures known as 'The Watchers' are lurking. Inside the house, there are peculiar rules for survival to avoid disastrous consequences. Determined to escape the house and the forest, Mina is willing to do whatever it takes to understand the creatures and find a way to freedom, even though previous escape attempts have resulted in death. Ishana Night Shyamalan makes her directorial debut with this film, and as the daughter of the legendary film director M. Night Shyamalan, she is also credited with some of the writing. It's wonderful to see Ishana following in her father's footsteps, and she successfully delivers a story with mysterious thriller vibes and multiple twists and turns. The setting of the forest and the introduction of The Watchers, world created an enjoyable atmosphere. The mysteries and storyline, including about the creatures in the forest and Mina’s connection to her mother, kept me engaged and hooked for most of the film. I was determined to understand the movie and uncover its secrets fully. I also want to mention the excellent soundtrack by composer Abel Korzeniowski, which perfectly complemented the entire film and enhanced the atmosphere wonderfully. After watching Ishana Shyamalan’s debut film, I can say that I had a mostly positive impression. She seems to be following in her father's footsteps, M. Night Shyamalan, which I have no complaints about. The film presents an intriguing concept with a mysterious storyline that got me interested and invested in finding out what happens. While most of the movie was a good thriller, I felt that the ending dragged on and didn't quite hit the mark. Dakota Fanning's performance was above average, but certain aspects of her character were questionable and hard to accept. If you're a fan of films like The Village and The Lady in the Water, you'll probably enjoy The Watchers. * This review has been written for Sanity.
