Freaky Friday takes a turn down under in the beloved romcom DATING THE ENEMY, newly restored from the Umbrella vault with NEW video extras, starring Guy Pearce (Memento) and Claudia Karvan (The Big Steal) as ex-lovers who inexplicably switch bodies. Meet Brett and Tash. Brett (Guy Pearce Memento, L.A Confidential) is good-looking, confident and perhaps a tad on the egotistical side. Tash (Claudia Karvan Bump, Love My Way) is intellectual and reserved, but maybe a little too smart for her own good. When these two meet it's love at first sight, but when a lack of compromise threatens to break-up their relationship, the natural forces of the universe intervene. One fateful night, after a heated argument, they wake up to discover that they have magically swapped bodies! The stage is set for a hilarious Aussie romantic comedy that takes the battle of the sexes to a brand new frontline. DATING THE ENEMY is a funny, charming tale of self-discovery and second chances. Will Tash and Brett find a way to reverse the spell and restore their relationship, or will their newfound understanding lead them to a different path altogether?

PRODUCT REVIEWS

Brett (Guy Pearce) lives in Melbourne, Australia and works full-time as a host for a television program that discusses all things music and pop culture. Tash (Claudia Karvan) is a journalist who covers all aspects of science. One night, a group of friends come together for a fun evening of trivial pursuit, and Brett and Tash, who are close friends of the hosts, are invited to join in. As the night continues, the two exchange flirtatious looks. At the end of the evening, Brett finds a moment alone with Tash and decides to express his feelings towards her. Tash is surprised by Brett’s openness and flattering approach. She acknowledges that they are quite different regarding their general interests and future goals, but this doesn’t stop Brett from leaning in for a kiss, which Tash can’t resist. After Brett and Tash's romantic game night, they are still dating. Brett is excelling at work, leading Australia's most popular TV show. His job involves celebrity interviews and a glamorous lifestyle. He has a new job opportunity on the horizon, but he hasn't discussed it with Tash yet. If he takes the new job, he must move to New York. Tash is still writing science articles, but her work environment is more chaotic and frustrating. She struggles to write news to secure a good page placement in the newspaper. On Valentine’s Day, Brett gives Tash beautiful flowers, but she finds out from a card that they were originally meant for someone else. As their evening together goes on, they keep clashing and disagreeing, especially when Brett is seen discussing work opportunities with another woman at a party. Tash thinks Brett has changed, while Brett feels that Tash constantly criticizes him. Their argument escalates, with Brett saying Tash wants him to be just like her and Tash wishing Brett could see how foolish he is. The argument embarrasses Brett, and Tash runs off, upset and hurt. On the same night, something magical happens, and the pair swap bodies. When Brett and Tash wake up and discover the change, they initially think it's a nightmare. They attempt to reverse the body swap but are unsuccessful. They realise that they must now work together to find a way for their lives to continue and for them to maintain their careers. I enjoyed watching "Dating the Enemy" as a teenager, and revisiting it recently made me realise how much I still love this well-performed romantic comedy. While body swap films are nothing new, the focus on the attraction of opposites in this movie feels fresh and new. Guy Pearce and Claudia Karvan deliver excellent performances, bringing humour and heartfelt moments to the screen, and their chemistry as a couple is captivating. The film is filled with random, playful gags and awkward moments, making it a great comedy. "Dating the Enemy" is a standout romantic comedy from the 90s that deserves recognition and praise. * This review has been written for Sanity.
