PRODUCT REVIEWS

Brilliant 50th film from one of the USA’s best writer directors. Like “Match Point”, “Midnight in Paris”, “Blue Jasmine”, and “Vicky, Christina, Barcelona”, this is part of Woody Allen’s brilliant “third act” of creative energy in a career already lauded for two amazing first acts (the slapstick period, “Bananas”, “”Sleeper”, etc.) and the unexpected maturity and inventiveness of his second act (Annie Hall”, “Manhattan”, “Alice”, “Purple Rose of Rose of Cairo”, etc.). Even during his less successful periods there were moments of brilliance (“Husbands & wives”, “Crimes and Misdemeanors”). And more than a few of the films of this latest third period of productivity have been overshadowed by the political puppetry of a spurned past lover in tabloids and social media (“Rifkin’s Festival”, “You Will Meet a Tall Dark stranger”, and others haven’t gotten their just due). Here’s hoping the third act includes more than a few encores.

When Fanny (Lou de Laâge) walks along a busy street, she hears her name being called out from afar. A man approaches her, claiming to know her from high school. Fanny is initially surprised but soon learns the man is Alain (Niels Schneider). In high school, Alain was deeply in love with Fanny, but they never managed to take the next step. The couple has an introductory conversation and catches up, during which Alain learns about Fanny’s current job as an art auctioneer. We hear that Alain recently moved back into the area to focus on his writing. After a brief chit-chat, the pair go their separate ways. Fanny returns home and greets her husband, Jean (Melvil Poupaud). She chooses not to share her encounter with Alain and continues as if nothing unusual happened during her day. However, it becomes apparent that Fanny isn't entirely happy with her marriage to Jean. She feels that he is possessive and overly obsessed with her. Despite having successful careers and leading affluent lives, Fanny's marriage lacks joy, excitement, and romance. The next day, Fanny receives a phone call at work from Alain, suggesting that they catch up for lunch, to which Fanny agrees. The two continue to meet and enjoy each other's company, eventually starting a secret love affair. As Fanny carefully covers her tracks regarding the affair, suspicions begin to grow in her husband, Jean. Fanny returns home and greets her husband, Jean (Melvil Poupaud). "In 'Coup de Chance,' director and writer Woody Allen revisits familiar themes, offering a pleasing and enjoyable film, particularly for his long-term fans and those who appreciate dramatic, dark comedy. The film excels in writing, dialogue, and cinematography, drawing viewers in and keeping them engaged even when the characters make puzzling or unwise decisions. However, the choice of jazz tunes for the soundtrack doesn't always complement the scenes, at times feeling out of place and distracting. While some performances shine more than others, loyal fans of the director will likely be delighted to see his work on the big screen once again." * This review has been written for Sanity.
