PRODUCT REVIEWS

The following text is about the movie Dune, which is based on the famous novel by Frank Herbert. The movie begins with a narration that introduces the universe of Dune and provides a brief explanation of the different planets involved in the story. The film is quite heavy, just based on its opening alone. The plot of Dune can also be challenging to follow when watching it for the first time, especially if you haven't read the novel. In a nutshell, the story revolves around a man named Paul Atreides (played by Kyle MacLachlan), who is the son of a Duke. Paul discovers that he possesses supernatural powers and has a significant role to play in the grand scheme of things. Due to its complicated plot, Dune feels incredibly cramped. The film's opening act was great, and the explanations about the world and how it all works were also positive to see. The first act is relatively easygoing with its plot and builds up our interest in the leading character. However, once the film reaches the second and third acts, it all feels rushed and as if there were many scenes left on the editing room floor. The cuts between some scenes feel abrupt and out of place. Moreover, the film provides the audience with inner monologues from key characters, which begin to appear more commonly in the second act. At times, these monologues come across as slightly cheesy and as a last-minute addition to the final cut. The film's audio and visuals are exceptional. I was amazed to see the creativity of the movie come to life. The Blu-ray remastering is remarkable, especially considering the year it was made. I must also commend the film's DTS-HD audio track and the soundtrack featuring Toto was impressive. The use of landscapes and different planets added a fun element to the movie. Although some of the action sequences were obviously green-screened, they still hold up nicely. Overall, this film is fascinating in so many ways. As a sci-fi film, there is much to praise visually, along with the performances and soundtrack by Toto. However, the plot feels somewhat complicated and overloaded. In addition, some scenes don't fit well with the pace and story of the film, particularly in the second and third acts. Nevertheless, I found plenty to enjoy and fans of the Dune novel will undoubtedly gain the most enjoyment from watching this film. * This review has been written for Sanity.
