As Philadelphia continues to usher forth performer after talented performer, you'd kinda think that the flood would stem a little soon. Not so - and Ursula Rucker is the latest Philly native to splash gloriously into centre-stage. Her gift is her poetry and the 'Supa Sista' album gives her a platform from which to launch her ideals and ideas, whether they be on black music, child abuse, love or whatever. All done in front of a back-drop of minimal jazz, hip-hop and soul (think a less comfortable, more confrontational Jill Scott or Dana Bryant), these are words that can scald as well as bewitch. Thus far, Ursula has been the final voice on three albums from The Roots; from now on in we can expect them to return the favours.
