A Film by Justine Triet

For the past year, Sandra, a German writer, her French husband Samuel, and their eleven-year-old son Daniel have lived a secluded life in a remote town in the French Alps. When Samuel is found dead in the snow below their chalet, the police question whether he committed suicide or was killed. Samuel's death is treated as suspicious, presumed murder, and Sandra becomes the main suspect. Little by little the trial becomes not just an investigation of the circumstances of Samuel's death, but an unsettling psychological journey into the depths of Sandra and Samuel's conflicted relationship.

PRODUCT REVIEWS

For the last year, a family of three consisting of Samuel (Samuel Theis), Sandra (Sandra Hüller), and their vision-impaired son, Daniel (Milo Machado Graner), have been living in an isolated home in the mountains. The film opens with Sandra attempting to share a conversation with a guest. However, the chat is interrupted as Samuel conducts house repairs on the floors above, accompanied by loud, disruptive music. Unable to continue the conversation, Sandra's guest leaves, and Daniel takes his dog for a walk, leaving only Samuel and Sandra at home. When Daniel finishes his walk and returns home, he discovers a dead body outside his house. He quickly calls for help, and his mother, Sandra, also comes to the scene. They find the body of Samuel lying face down in the snow, with trails of blood as if he crawled there. As the local authorities investigate, they discover inconsistencies in the evidence, and Sandra becomes a prime suspect in Samuel's death. Her life and secrets will be scrutinized during the trial, and the world will watch and decide whether Samuel's death was a suicide, an accident, or a homicide. "Anatomy of a Fall" is a gripping crime story that is shrouded in mystery and drama. The death of Samuel, a key character, occurs off-screen, leaving the audience in suspense and making them try to guess what happened. The film's atmosphere is charged with tension as Sandra, the prime suspect in Samuel's death, faces fierce opposition in the courtroom. She is constantly challenged to prove her innocence and defend herself against accusations. The stakes are high, as Sandra's son is visually impaired and heavily relies on her care. If Sandra is found guilty, her son will be left without a proper caregiver, and she will face a significant loss. Anatomy of a Fall is a murder mystery that surprised me with its plot. The story explores what happens when someone is accused of murder. Although the death scene is not shown, it is surrounded by mystery and drama throughout the film. The outcome and finale were unexpected and left a lasting impression on me. The film's visual style, set locations, and musical score were all excellent, and the leading performances were robust, believable and touching. Overall, it was a great journey that stayed with me long after the credits. * This review has been written for Sanity.
