Jake (Ethan Hawke) only wants one thing in life: to be a police detective. We see Jake wake up, get dressed, and begin today, in which he will meet up with Alonzo (Denzel Washington) at a diner. Alonzo is an undercover narcotics detective who will spend the entire day with Jake to train and test to see if he has what it takes to keep the city streets safe and at peace. However, Jake soon learns that not only is Alonzo highly loud and energetic, but he also holds a dark secret that will force Jake to make some of the hardest choices he's ever faced while wearing a badge. Upon my first viewing of Training Day, it truly took me by surprise for multiple reasons. Firstly, the story was surprising and unpredictable. If you think Jake is about to have a day with training and information from his more experienced detective, think again. Denzel Washington steals this film whenever he's on-screen, and it's no surprise that the actor took the Oscar for best actor. Training Day is about a rookie cop who spends his first day as an LA police officer with a crazy detective who isn't what he appears to be. This film is so bloody good it makes a lot of other police films pale in comparison. Denzel is absolutely fantastic in his Oscar winning role and Ethan Matches him all the way. Masterpiece level 10/10
