The first creative album in 7 years... “A remarkable achievement of Korean jazz”

Jazz diva Marlowe released her 6th album 'Winter and Spring', which sang about 'the age of loss'. The album contains a total of 12 original songs, including two songs commemorating the Sewol tragedy. All songs are masterpieces that harmonize beautiful jazz language and emotional mother tongue. Marlowe composed all the songs, and Lee Joo-yeop, who has been working together since the 3rd album 'Cherry Blossoms Fall', wrote the lyrics.

In this work, which is their first creative album in 7 years, they are showing their mature musical abilities in words. Based on jazz, he borrowed various folk music phrases such as nuevo tango, samba, flamenco, and arabic sound. Marlowe's sense of melody is fluid, and her vocals are mature and free. This album shows an example of how jazz, the language of the world, can correspond to the deepest inner world of Koreans. As with the previous album, Marlow took charge of not only composing and singing, but also arranging and producing.

. Marlowe has broken the conventional wisdom that “Korean doesn’t go well with jazz” and has opened a new horizon for Korean jazz. 'Cherry blossoms' (3rd album, 2003) and 'To You Now' (4th album, 2007) are his representative works. Marlowe is once again expanding the scope of the aesthetics in this album. Regarding this album, jazz critic Hwang Deok-ho highly praised it, saying, “You will taste the wonder.”

The shadow of Korean society in 2014 is wide and long. This album resonates with the times, in the midst of loss and pain. Even the spring to greet after a difficult winter is full of the futility of life and fundamental sorrow rather than swollen hope. The album is lonely, crumbly, and wanders somewhere.

The ongoing Sewol ferry incident left a huge psychological gap in our society in 2014. In words, two songs commemorating the Sewol ferry disaster, 'Don't Forget' and 'Back to My Place' were included on the album, leaving a musical record of the misfortune and pain that suddenly struck. The 7-minute long song 'Don't Forget' reminds us of the sadness of the Sewol Ferry, which is being forgotten with the calm song of the victim and the trumpet sound of the requiem. The title song of this album, 'Back to my place' is a song that wants everyone to return to their daily lives from the place of hurt and pain. In the chorus that explodes with the chorus, sadness rises up to the throat.

The album's first track, 'Blue Whistle', is a song based on an essay written by novelist Choi In-ho while battling cancer. In the essay, the writer said, “Do not be sick, children of this land, my sisters, and my mother. Look out the window, a new spring is rising.” This song is a paraphrase of that text. The last song, 'March Snow', was inspired by the play of the same name. 'March Snow', premiered by old actors Jang Min-ho and Baek Sung-hee, is a play like a proverb about disappearing things. For Jang Min-ho, this play became his last posthumous work.
