The Breakfast Club meets the outback in this uplifting coming-of-age road movie

In remote Pilbara country in Western Australia, troubled 16 year old Indigenous girl, Murra, finds herself abandoned after an explosive incident with her drug fuelled mother. On the cusp of being lost in the Child Protection system, an unusual lifeline is thrown her way by her uncle Ian, the local cop, in the form of a unique Photo Safari. Before Murra knows it, she is careening down a dusty highway with a minibus full of at risk teens and two charismatic team leaders. Will this be the lifeline Murra needs or a catalyst for her demise? PRODUCT REVIEWS

I saw this movie at the Berlinale film festival when it won the Crystal Bear in February 2023. As soon as I realized it was released on DVD in Australia I had to order a copy. It is a really thrilling teenager / family drama. I f you enjoy deep going. If you like profound, reality-based dramas, away from the usual popcorn - action, I can highly recommend this movie to you. I think this is already the third time I order from Sanity in Australia to Germany. Their service is really great and I would like to express my sincere thanks. Occasionally these small pearls of really great films are created by Australian film makers. In this case I don’t mind the shipping costs.

Murra (Shantae Barnes-Cowan) is a young Indigenous teenager. Home life for Murra could be a lot better. After an altercation occurs at home, Murra’s mother drives away from all conflict within the family. Thankfully, Murra’s uncle, Ian (Mark Coles Smith), is also a local policeman. Ian takes care of her and tries to help with some of the recent family problems. At the same time, Murra’s behaviour is becoming increasingly self-destructive, which is also witnessed by her uncle. While problems at home are being slowly resolved, Ian enrols Murra in a “photo-safari” for at-risk kids, an unexpected opportunity that impacts her life. Murra is unconvinced that the safari will offer her anything. Led by a pair of counsellors, Fernando (Carlos Sanson Jr.) and Michelle (Tasma Walton), she will travel by bus, stopping to take some photographs along the way. With no other choice around her, she gets on the bus with fellow passengers, including Kylie (Mikayla Levy), Sean (Andrew Wallace), and Elvis (Pedrea Jackson). As the journey begins, many leading characters, including Murra, have new experiences and life-changing moments. Sweet As is a coming-of-age drama film by Nyul Nyul / Yawuru Director Jub Clerc. Publicity describes Sweet As as “…The Breakfast Club meets the Outback…” which I highly agree with. It’s a movie with positive messages, including the idea that life is not over even when life is at its worst. It’s also a story I’m confident will be relatable. Murra makes friends with unlikely people, has a first crush and discovers a hobby that becomes far more touching. Murra isn’t the only teenager we meet; the fellow teenagers who travel with her also carry different backstories and personalities. The counsellors are human enough that they, too, don’t always get things right (again, hence the vibe of The Breakfast Club). The pacing is great, starting with a gripping opening. Audiences will find themselves invested in Murra’s life, hoping for a pleasing outcome by the film's finale. As Murra goes on the trip, you can’t help but be curious about her self-discovery, whether it’s her enjoyment of photography or how she interacts with people around her. By the third act, there’s a pleasing sense that you shared this journey with Murra, and a sense of achievement and positivity comes from it. Overall, Sweet As truly feels like “…The Breakfast Club meets the Outback…”. There’s a plot outline here that’s heartfelt and touching. Audiences can connect with many themes, and relatable moments are felt throughout. The pacing is solid, with a rewarding conclusion. The leading performance from actress Shantae Barnes-Cowan as Murra is excellent and convincing as she journeys into a world of self-discovery, healing and forgiveness. * This review has been written for Sanity.
