Mommy loves you to death.

New Line Cinema and Renaissance Pictures present a return to the iconic horror franchise, Evil Dead Rise, from writer/director Lee Cronin (The Hole in the Ground). The movie stars Lily Sullivan (I Met a Girl, Barkskins), Alyssa Sutherland (The Mist, Vikings), Morgan Davies (Storm Boy, The End), Gabrielle Echols (Reminiscence) and introducing Nell Fisher (Northspur).Moving the action out of the woods and into the city, Evil Dead Rise tells a twisted tale of two estranged sisters, played by Sutherland and Sullivan, whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.

“EVIL DEAD RISE” (SPOILER FREE REVIEW) Lee Cronin has crafted a mesmerising and horrifying gorefest with “Evil Dead Rise.” This was one of my most anticipated films to release of 2023 and I’m glad I got a chance to see it on the big screen. From the title card that hits you from the jump, the structure of the story’s narrative and name makes sense as a long time sequel to the “Evil Dead films. ED Rise It has all the tropes and camp you’d expect from the “Evil Dead” universe. Alyssa Sutherland as MOMMY plays one of my all time favourite deadites, she is petrifying and embracing every second in her role as a villain. This is her first major role. I think this performance will truely be a massive success for her as an actress. She’s effectively changing her mannerisms to make it seem like she could be a franchise defining antagonist that we’ve yet to see take the mantle. Lily Sullivan as the new final girl Beth is also very good here. She reminds me a lot of Mia from the 2013 reboot, but she certainly stands on her own too. There’s some wonderful moments With the kids that you’re rooting for to escape and defeat MOMMY. The plot effectively takes place in a household environment, this creates extreme tension and chaos between the family and which proceeds into scared beyond for the viewer. The run time is adrenaline pumping and works in the films favour, it left me wanting more as the gore and effects were top notch. There was a bunch of moments that were hard to watch but it made up for it due to timely action and mythos lore that we love of the necronomicon and it’s characters. “Evil Dead Rise” is a reminder that the iconic ED universe is still one of the greatest horror franchises of all time. A solid sequel after 10 years and one of the best horrors I’ve seen in a decade. 5/5

When Beth (Lily Sullivan) discovers life-changing personal news, she goes to visit her sister, Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland). Ellie has always been there for Beth and is the one she can count on when every bad choice is made. It doesn’t help that Beth considers herself a continual screw-up. As a single mother to three children, Ellie also faces many challenges. Currently living in a rundown apartment building in Los Angeles which is scheduled to be knocked down next month, she is forced to look for somewhere new to settle down while continuing to work as a tattoo artist and taking care of her children. When Beth turns to Ellie for help and support, it’s not long until this entire family encounters an ancient book that brings birth to demons who crave nothing but blood and a large desire to torture every soul on earth. Now, the two sisters and the young children are stuck inside their apartment, finding ways to survive the fight and escape the ultimate nightmare and terror. Evil Dead Rise serves as a fifth instalment to the popular horror franchise. Those unfamiliar with the franchise will be happy to know this film serves as a whole new story, introducing many characters who have never appeared in the series until now. Sure, there are few references to past movies and callbacks to well-known one-liners, but these feel more like easter eggs than the information you must know. Suppose you live for horror films that are highly tense to watch and filled with gruesome violence with lots of blood; welcome to Evil Dead Rise. This film easily warrants its R18+ rating and is packed with many uncomfortable and disturbing moments. Unlike some of the past Evil Dead films, which sometimes introduce a funny tone, this newest instalment is all about horror. If you enjoyed the previous movies for their randomness and fun, the suspense could disappoint you. Overall, Evil Dead Rise does not disappoint whether you are a fan of the series or being introduced to this nightmare world for the first time. Leading performances from Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland were impressive, along with the film’s strong visuals, such as the gritty location. Buffs of all things relating to horror, gore, violence, and blood will be excited here too. There are plenty of uncomfortable moments. The film successfully brings a gruesome nightmare to life, leaving fans wanting more or perhaps desiring to go back in time and revisit previous films. *This review has been written for Sanity.
