Continuing from Scream (2022), aka Scream 5, we are reintroduced to the survivors from the last time Ghostface showed up. Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera), Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega), Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown) and Chad (Mason Gooding). The group decided to say goodbye to Woodsboro and start a new life in New York City. While living in the city begins positively, Sam has regular appointments with a counsellor. As you may expect, it’s not long until the new Ghostface appears, killing people within the city streets. However, there’s something different about this Ghostface: it seems to be wearing an old, worn-out face mask. Sam isn’t just being targeted; she’s also a key suspect in the new killings. Sam and her friends must do everything possible to discover why a Ghostface has resurfaced. More importantly, who is the masked killer or perhaps again, is there more than one? Familiar faces from the past also reappear, including Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), who can’t help but get invested and curious about the reappearance of Ghostface. As a Scream fan, I’m excited to say this film raises the bar wonderfully and introduces new and improved aspects that are fun and thrilling. Firstly, the setting of New York City instead of Woodsboro is perfect for a Scream film. Right from the opening (which goes off with a bang), I loved the engaging location of New York City. Violence and gore levels are also raised to a new level, and some kills are intensely gruesome and unexpected. While this is the first time a Scream film doesn’t feature actress Neve Campbell, I found the cast who do appear again carried the film wonderfully. The old-looking Ghostface is also a welcomed change that only adds mystery for audiences. As for some of the introduced side characters, most are also fine. Yet I must confess that some side characters we follow here seem poorly introduced and vague, and I found it challenging to grasp who they really were. While reveals in a Scream film are always exciting, only some things surrounding them this time round will make sense, particularly the finer details. I found myself wanting to understand better. While audiences will witness tense moments in the plot and violent kills, the storyline and its path feel more familiar than in previous films. The third act also felt like filmmakers wanted to play it safe and not upset the movie lovers instead of pushing the boundaries or hitting new heights. Overall, the Scream series continues to do what its always done best- provide entertainment and fun with many tense moments and unpredictable outcomes. The opening starts with a bang; it’s all filled with surprises. Big reveals here are a little hard to accept, making this not quite a cut above the rest, but it’s still entertaining regardless of its faults. As a sixth instalment, I’m excited that the film introduced a new, exciting setting and location. Kills and violence also go up a notch, a positive aspect of the latest instalment. However, when it comes to its story, as the end credits appeared, I felt the entire film was either slightly repetitive or it was played safely for the sake of pleasing fans. There are also minor plot details that I needed clarification on, and that seemed unclear. Let’s face it- this is the kind of slasher in which finer plot aspects will only phase some audience members like myself. * This review has been written for Sanity. “SCREAM 6” ?? - (Non spoiler review) ???? An excellent addition to the “SCREAM” franchise. “SCREAM 6” features the Nastiest kills seen in the franchise. Ghostface is roaming the streets of NYC with more rage and ruthlessness then ever. Was pleasantly surprised by more excellent cinematography, sequences and of course ghostface using a shotgun next to a knife. ?? Besides the obvious choice of a new setting, the tone is very serious and less campy. Characters are really driven home with a great script, with meta sprinkled throughout. It bites down on the posing question of how far can you really go with an IP. Whilst maintaining its integrity. Furthermore, this is definitely a change from themes before it. Bringing back the old cast from the last film was a great idea and choice to make. Many moments throughout are tension filled and highly emotional. Surprisingly, they all work well! With the outstanding character and standout performance’s by @jennaortega (Tara) & (Sam) @melissabarreram both carpenter sisters put and Helmed at the front of the SQUAD. In saying all this, there are some gripes. It goes without saying, the elephant in the room has to be Neve Campbells departure from the franchise. Trailers did a great job at hiding most of what unfolds on screen within its solid run time. However, unfortunately my gripe is that this film definitely was missing her character - Sidney Prescott, in certain moments, as predicted by most horror fans, the absence is quite noticeably clear in key plot moments. Its bittersweet and is an utter shame to know she was not paid adequately for the role she birthed in the 90s as a vintage scream queen. She deserves all the most happiness in the world, for her own sake I hope she enjoys time off. In similar vein I enjoyed the last film, but absolutely adored this one a lot more as a huge fan of this iconic slasher franchise. It’s bleak, brutal, selfless and tragic. At the end of the day, it works! “SCREAM 6” is original in execution compared to other entires before it. Ghostface, is back baby. ?? A borderline masterful slasher, easily the best “SCREAM” since the original. ???? I could not be more surprised. ?? 5/5 ??
