PRODUCT REVIEWS

‘Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness’ was an absolute blast from start to finish, and may just be the best Marvel movie in Phase 4 thus far. The film benefits from horror filmmaking legend Sam Raimi at the helm in the directors chair, lending his signature style and substance to the MCU. There are references here for hardcore Sam Raimi fans including a cameo from friend and life-long collaborator Bruce Campbell as a ‘pizza ball’ salesman in another universe and an appearance from the Evil Dead’s Oldmobile car that has made appearances in Drag Me To Hell, and Raimi’s Spider-Man films. The film has a visual quality that has been lacking from recently Marvel films, with fun, energised action sequences that feel very specific to the world of Dr Strange and play into Sam Raimi’s visual wheelhouse. Dr Strange the sarcastic, former Sorcerer Supreme, is played superbly again by Bennedict Cumberbatch. He nails the role, providing many moments of levity throughout, through his expert delivery of the comedic dialogue. He also ground the character in reality (our reality), by reminding us that even though he is a master magician, he is also a human being, with feelings. There’s real heart on display here, with Strange dealing with his love lost with Dr Christine Palmer, played once again by Rachel McAdams. Their chemistry is great and really sells their universal connection through the multiverse. Strange’s relationship as well with Multiversal traveller, America Chavez, played superbly by realistic newcomer Xochitl Gomez (The Baby-Sitters Club reboot). America gives Strange purpose in wanting to complete his mission and there is a lot of back and forth with their characters which I adored. The real standout though in this film is Elizabeth Olsen’s villainous turn as the former avenger, turned villainess Wanda Maximoff. This evil turn has been building through WandaVision, but it comes to a head in this film, as Wanda is revealed to have been corrupted by the Darkhold, an ancient book that hopes to unite Wanda with her children from another dimension. Olsen sells the role, showing that she is capable of dismantling anyone who gets in her way. She’s truly terrifying here and easily the best part of the film. And a special shout-out to Wong, played again by Bennerdict Wong, who is just great as this character. The films implications for future MCU films is also massive. We are introduced to many elements that will play out in future MCU films that I’m not going to spoil here, but you need to be on the lookout throughout the film. Also, make sure you sit through the after credits sequences, as there are parts you won’t want to miss, including a hilarious cameo from Bruce Campbell again. Overall, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was an absolute blast from start to finish. Filled with the Marvel action and comedy blend that the team here do so very well, but topped off with the style and substance of Sam Raimi’s direction. The two tones go hand-in-hand and the result is a fantastic time at the movies. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now out on DVD, Blu-Ray and 4K UHD, be sure to head to your local Sanity or online to pick up your copy today! Continuing from where we last left Doctor Strange from Spider-Man: No Way Home, Steven (aka Dr Strange) is attempting to move forward with his life. While trying to stay positive, he deals with the aftermath of his involvement in the fight against Thanos. Now his desire to live an easy life is soon interrupted by a huge discovery in the city, leading to him further questioning the multiverse. Based on new clues, he accepts that he cannot tackle this new mission on his own and is forced to work with both new and familiar faces. Doctor Strange will go on a journey unlike anything fans have seen in the Marvel cinematic universe. I have purposely given a vague plot outline to avoid spoilers, especially because the film makes major reveals early in the film. Firstly, this Marvel film has taken a bold step and, in my opinion, is the darkest and most violent film in the Marvel universe, mostly due to its new element of horror. As for the horror aspect, the film introduces many creepy moments that may cause some viewers to jump out of their seats with fright or perhaps feel scared and disturbed. The horror aspect is something new and fresh that most fans will find joy and pleasure in; however, some families with a younger audience will be more shocked at how dark Marvel has decided to go with this new addition. The level of violence is also increased, and the film introduces a new level of dark themes, including supernatural magic, dark arts and witchcraft. While watching this sequel, one thing is certain; one man has his signature written all over it. Director Sam Rami is known for his work on titles such as Drag Me to Hell, Evil Dead and the original Spider-Man series. Here, the director feels like he’s combining Evil Dead and Spider-Man into one film. Some moments feel like an Evil Dead instalment, but the director still reminds the audiences that they are watching a new superhero film by adding touching moments and comedic gags to the screen. The performances here are great. Once again, I loved seeing Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange. The actor delivers a fun yet highly confident character to the screen and even extends his character to a whole new level. Elizabeth Olsen was also brilliant, and many moments from the actress feel genuinely heartfelt, heavy and filled with various emotions and struggles. Visually, there are plenty of stunning moments here. Some scenes are highly wild and creative, especially aspects relating to the multiverse, creatures, and the action sequences. Composer Danny Elfman delivers a solid score that feels fitting. Overall, as a Marvel film, this is the darkest, most violent, supernatural film from what I have seen. I loved seeing this film push new boundaries thanks to Director Sam Rami, who goes back to his roots to make a film that feels like Evil Dead and Spider-Man combined. The film has strong visuals, a solid music score and a plot that delivers plenty of surprises, unpredictability, wild creativity and heartfelt moments; however, the film’s dark and heavy tones aren’t going to fit all audiences who see it, and the same could be said about the main plot. The plot has its moments where it feels slow and slightly drags on reaching its conclusion. Some lines of dialogue are packed with magic babble, such as talking about books and spells, which isn’t going to please everyone. As a sequel, it’s extremely different and loaded with shocking yet disturbing moments, which in the end, is a welcome addition to the experience. * This review has been written for Sanity.
