A genre that has been absent from movie theatres for the best part of a decade is the ‘romantic comedy’ genre. In 2022 however, there has been a resurgence thanks to films such as: ‘Marry Me’ and ‘The Lost City’. Both films were big hits both critically and commercially, with ‘The Lost City’ grossing over $150 million at the worldwide box office. ‘The Lost City’ stars Sandra Bullock, Channing Tatum, Daniel Radcliffe, and Brad Pitt and follows a reclusive albeit successful romantic novelist Angela (played by Bullock) as she embarks on a worldwide tour of her new book with her cover model Alan (played by Tatum) as they are both swept up in a kidnapping attempt by millionaire Abigail Fairfax (played by Radcliffe). Zaniness ensues and now we have our rom-com. I have been starved for this type of entertainment of late and it’s safe to say, that ‘The Lost City’ was an absolute blast from start to finish. As mentioned, I have been looking forward to a fun action-comedy for quite some time, and along comes ‘The Lost City' to scratch that itch. Although the film is filled with cliches and genre tropes as far as the eye can see, I found comfort in that. The film leads Bullock and Tatum to have a remarkable chemistry with one another. The two make for an unlikely couple, but a great pair of leads. I adored their back and forth, finding myself swept up in their story. Harry Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe, sheds the good boy persona, to take on the lead villainous role here, as Abigail Fairfax. This isn’t Radcliffe’s first time as a villain, previously playing one in 2016s ‘Now You See Me 2’ and 2013s ‘Horns’. The millionaire, bad boy persona really suits Radcliffe here, he brings a level of charm and charisma to the character that only he could. A film like this is only ever as good as its villain, and luckily, the villain here is magnificent. The country-hopping here in the film is also a lot of fun. After being stuck at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic for the best part of two years, it is nice to see other locations in a film, with vast jungle scapes and gorgeous flora from these exotic locations. With a majority of the principal photography for the film was completed in the Dominion Republic, the directing duo of brothers Aaron and Adam Nee, did a great job of utilising the location to make the film feel like a real, exotic adventure. The action sequences are also a lot of fun, whilst not rivaling top-tier actioners like ‘John Wick’ and ‘Mad Max’, the film does a great job of creating light-hearted and fun set pieces, that feel fresh and different from films we’ve seen recently. Overall, ‘The Lost City’ was a lot of fun. It may not convert the un-converted, but the film remains fresh, fun, and an absolute blast. Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum are great together and make the film what it is. This is a must-watch for genre fans and those who are after something fun and different. The Lost City is now available on DVD, Blu-ray & 4K UHD. Head on over to your local Sanity or online to pick up your copy today! Christopher Pattison wrote this blog post for Sanity.
