PRODUCT REVIEWS

I did not enjoy this movie. It was too disjointed and had a plot which could have been told in a few sentences. Ke Huy Quan was good.

Multiverse-themed films have become a trend of late, with the popular animated tv series 'Rick & Morty' kickstarting the concept, 'Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse' cementing it in popular culture and and Marvel Cinematic Universe films 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' and 'Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness' continuing the trend. 'Everything, Everywhere, All At Once' does a brilliant job exploring this concept, delving into the mechanics of how it works, but not letting this bog down the narrative and the amazing character work that the Daniels do so well with here. The directing duo know exactly what works here and know that the film relies heavily on lead, Michell Yeoh's performance. They capitalise on this making her appear front and centre in the narrative, giving the audience wonderful variations of her character through very different walks of life. Michelle Yeoh has had a wonderful career, but her performance here might just be the highlight. She is wonderful as Evylyn, we learn so much about her background and why she is the way that she is. The film does a masterful job of exploring her character, giving her depth that many protagonists lack in big screen films. Yeoh portrays these layers with gravitas and poise, showcasing her immense skill as one of Hollywood's most underrated performers. Yeoh also has a lot of heavy lifting to do here, she adds a slight variation to each of the versions of her character that she is playing and I found her to be revolutionary in this role. The supporting cast is also excellent with Jamie Lee Curtis also doing a magnificent job in a supporting role and Evylyn's husband Waymond played by Short-round himself, Ke Huy Quan, who is magnificent in the film. A real standout among the supporting cast though is Evylyn's daughter Joy Wang played by Stephanie Hsu, who is given a lot to do and a great deal of emotional depth. Her character is fantastic and Hsu does a wonderful job. She is a telnt too watch! The film doesn't rely too heavily on special effects and spectacle. Its atmosphere is created from the subtle uses of this spectacular world. The effects are still stunning and are, a lot of the time, unrecognisable which is one of the biggest compliments you can give to any film. The Daniels understand the story they are telling and use their budgetary limitations to their advantage, providing a stronger emphasis on character and narrative, whilst also creating breathtaking action sequences from very little. The action here is incredible, with a lot of in-camera stunt work on display. Overall, 'Everything, Everywhere, All At Once' is one of the best original films of the past decade. The film is anchored by an Oscar-worthy performance from Michelle Yeoh and is elevated by the expert craftsmanship of the directing duo, the Daniels. I could not recommend this film any more than I have and I am so grateful that Roadshow have given this release the 4K UHD treatment. If any film was in need of a release like this, it was Everything, Everywhere, All At Once. Be sure to head on over to your local Sanity or online to pick up your copy on DVD, Blu-Ray or 4K UHD today, you won't want to miss this one! Christopher Pattison wrote this blog post for Sanity. Evelyn (Michelle Yeoh) and her husband, Waymond (Ke Huy Quan), own the local laundromat, and their home is located on the floor above.  As the movie begins, we soon discover more about Evelyn and Waymond’s marriage and the challenges occurring around them.  Some of these relate to the stress of the business, Evelyn struggling to accept her daughter’s new relationship status and being concerned about what others will think, and Evelyn looking after her unwell father. Evelyn has a strange encounter when the family attends an appointment with Deirdre Beaubeirdra (Jamie Lee Curtis) about the family’s outrageous tax claims on their laundromat business.  But, Evelyn is about to discover even larger problems that require her attention.  She learns that the fate of her world now lays in her hands.  But it’s not just her world that needs saving- it’s the entire universe!  Evelyn must now go on the greatest adventure, entering the many worlds within the multiverse.  As she does so, she experiences the various paths of what her life could have been while saving all life and existence as we know it. Everything Everywhere All at Once is best described as a comedy, adventure, fantasy and action.  The film’s plot is witty and wild.  Nothing about this film is predictable and I compare it to a roller coaster ride.  Once the basic introduction and plot outline pass, the film moves at a fast rate with lots going on.  With this type of film, all you need to do is sit down in your chair, strap yourself in for a ride and take joy in the experience. Directors Dan Kan and Daniel Scheinert (best known for the previous film, Swiss Army Men) have a taste for random, crazy, and over the top comedy.  Even when compared to their previous films, this film somehow still manages to go up another level.  This film had me smiling and laughing multiple times, but I’ll confess a couple of gags didn’t work as well as I would have preferred.  Laughter aside, this film has some serious heart behind it.  It’s a fun film where viewers will experience moments of emotions and themes right from the start.  I loved seeing the adventure, no matter how crazy and silly some aspects are.  The actors are committed to giving everything they’ve got, including the lead; Michelle Yeoh, who is no surprise, is wonderful. Visually, I can’t fault this film.  If you don’t quite understand what’s going on, don’t worry.  The film is still visually entertaining and wonderful, packed with many remarkable moments that feel fresh and creative.  One example was how the aspect ratio is altered to suit the atmosphere as Evelyn visits throughout the multiverse.  Costumes are stunning and creative.  Sound effects don’t disappoint, and the action scenes are unexpected and great.  In the end, I found myself feeling highly impressed with this film not just because of its entertaining and fun plot, but because it’s also a very clever film. Overall, This film is witty and crazy!  Nothing about it is ever boring.  Instead, it is creative and clever, and I loved that the cast committed everything they had towards it, including its lead, Michelle Yeoh, who is, again, tremendous.  Sure, a film about the multiverse may seem to be a familiar concept.  Still, viewers will feel many emotions and have fun experiencing it thanks to clever visuals, costuming, touching themes about family and relationships.
