PRODUCT REVIEWS

One of the biggest surprises in recent years was ‘Sonic: The Hedgehog’ released just prior to the commencement of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The film became a massive laughing stock even before it was released into theatres. The film underwent some heavy re-shoots and character re-design after fan backlash from the first trailer. But boy did all of this hard work pay off. The film was an instant hit, pulling in over $300 million at the worldwide box office and making a huge dent in the home media market. Paramount Pictures knew they had a hit on their hands, so quickly developed a sequel and now here we are in 2020 and that sequel has already hit cinemas and is headed to home media this month. After what they did with the first film, I was excited to explore the world of Sonic once more, with new characters such as Knuckles (voiced by Idris Elba) entering the fray. Sonic The Hedgehog 2 was a lot of fun. The film builds off what was established in the first film, with a lot of those fun elements returning such as Jim Carey’s eccentric bad guy Dr. Robotnik. The film doubles down on the Sonic lore, exploring the scenic vistas of Sonic’s homeworld whilst also returning to earth with familiar locations from the first film. I love the world-building here, it is fun, inventive, and provides plenty of easter eggs for Sonic fans (film, television, comics, games, or otherwise). The visual design is also a lot of fun here. Whilst the designs are very cartoonish in nature, they feel like they are pulled directly from the source material, that the film was based. Ben Schwartz is once again hilarious as the voice of Sonic. He lends his childlike vocals to the character, giving him life and making him relatable. It is one of the best portrayals of the character, and I for one would love to see Schwartz lend his vocals to the character in the games as well. Idris Elba as Knuckles was a stroke of genius. His monotone vocal presence, gives Knuckles the ominous, anti-hero vibes, that fans have come to expect from the titular character. Elba has become Hollywood’s go-to for morally ambiguous characters in recent years and for good reason, he kills it here as Knuckles and I hope he returns in the already announced Sonic The Hedgehog 3. The rest of the cast is also great, with the human character Tom Wachowski played by James Marsden. Marsden once again plays the human sidekick to Schwartz’s loveable Sonic. The two have amazing chemistry with one another and you almost wish they could have their own odd couple-styled TV show. Overall, Sonic The Hedgehog 2 doesn’t break any new ground, but for fans of the original film, fans of the game franchise, and those just looking for a good time, this one has you covered. It's harmless entertainment for the whole family. Head on over to your local Sanity or online to get your copy of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on DVD, Blu-Ray, or 4K UHD today, you won’t want to miss this one! Continuing on from where we last left Sonic (Ben Schwartz), the Hedgehog continues trying to blend in and find his true purpose within the city.  Sonic walks the streets like a superhero vigilante at night, calling himself “Blue Justice”.  When police sirens go off, Sonic rushes to try and save the day and protect those who are in need of a rescue.  But when Sonic is involved in a car chase that ends horribly wrong, Sonic discovers that being a hero is not an easy task.  Perhaps he should learn to wait for the right time when his powers and skills are best used rather than forcing himself to save the day all the time. Sonic still lives with Tom (James Marsden) and his wife, Maddie (Tika Sumpter).  When Tom and his wife go to Hawaii to attend a friend’s wedding, Sonic gets the house to himself, allowing him to be independent and have some downtime.  But it’s not long until Sonic is greeted by his old foe Dr Robotnik (Jim Carrey), who somehow managed to escape the deserted dimension surrounded by huge mushrooms.  But this time, Dr Robotnik isn’t alone.  Sonic encounters a powerful Echidna named Knuckles (Idris Elba), who believes Sonic has the key to discovering the ultimate power.  Thankfully Sonic won’t be alone for the unexpected fight as a new friend, Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey), attempts to locate Sonic and help him before it’s too late. If you enjoyed the previous film or personally love the character and the gaming franchise of Sonic the Hedgehog, strap yourself in for another fun film.  Not only does the film carry many fun easter egg references from both the Sonic games and the world of Sega, but as a sequel, there’s a stunning expansion to Sonic’s journey and a discovery of new characters such as Tails and Knuckles.  The introduction of new characters is welcoming here (especially Knuckles, who was downright awesome!).  Like the previous film, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a visual treat.  CGI characters, including Sonic, Tails and Knuckles, are stunning, and the visuals cannot be faulted.  The film’s soundtrack is loaded with familiar tunes, making certain action scenes an even bigger pleasure to watch.  Elements surrounding the film’s villain Dr Robotnik are great too.  The various devices and technology the mean doctor uses throughout differ from the previous film, keeping this sequel again, exciting and fresh for the entire duration.  Jim Carrey, like in the previous film, can’t be faulted.  He is again, over the top and fun, even if some one-liners or gags don’t quite land as solid a laugh as intended.  The actor’s on-screen energy never disappoints throughout the entire duration, and his costumes were wild and fun. Overall, this is a solid expansion of Sonic’s journey, and it’s great to see some new yet familiar characters from the gaming franchise.  Like the previous film, the visuals are solid and pleasing, along with actor Jim Carrey’s energetic and wildly over the top performance as the villain.  But sadly, the story is packed with several subplots that are highly uninteresting and unnecessary, especially during the first two acts, making the runtime just over two hours!  Thankfully, the film does manage to bring it home with an actioned packed third act but looking at the whole film, it’s a tiny step back from what I would have preferred after the last instalment.   * This review has been written for Sanity.
