Marvel Studios Eternals follows a group of heroes from beyond the stars who had protected the Earth since the dawn of man. When monstrous creatures called the Deviants, long thought lost to history, mysteriously return, the Eternals are forced to reunite in order to defend humanity once again. The outstanding ensemble cast includes Gemma Chan as humankind-loving Sersi, Richard Madden as the all-powerful Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as cosmic-powered Kingo, Lia McHugh as the eternally young, old-soul Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as the intelligent inventor Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as the super-fast Makkari, Barry Keoghan as aloof loner Druig, Don Lee as the powerful Gilgamesh, with Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, with Salma Hayek as the wise and spiritual leader Ajak, and Angelina Jolie as the fierce warrior Thena.

PRODUCT REVIEWS

Give it 4 out of 5 stars because it provided a good evening of great entertainment. The visuals are fantastic, the design superb, the special effects mind-blowing… with particular mention of the fascinating Deviants, and the costumes and powers of the Eternals. There are however ten (10!) eternals, so that even although the movie is well-written, well-directed and longer than most these days you hardly get to know each of them at all. It might have been better as a two-movie series. If there are going to be sequels (or a TV series) I will be delighted. The characters and their powers and problems are intriguing, and the overall struggle of good versus evil, including deciding what is good and what is evil, is reflected in our daily lives. Every action an inaction has positive and negative results…

Continuing from the events of Avengers Endgame, Eternals introduces movie lovers to a brand new group of superheroes. We learn that the Eternals are ancient aliens who have been walking around our Earth for thousands of years. They exist in secret and have protected the world against the monstrous threat known as Deviants. After the Eternals kill every Deviant on Earth, they take a new path. However, when a Deviant is spotted again on Earth, the team must again come together and investigate how an old enemy of theirs may have somehow returned. The Eternals' characters are extremely different from anything we've ever seen within the Marvel franchise. The same can be said about the film's plot, pace, style, and he direction within the Marvel Universe. The plot this time is deep and, at times, even a little darker than expected. While I welcome a new plot, concept, and direction in the universe, perhaps it's just me, but I found Eternals to be quite more dialogue-heavy. I'll also confess that there are multiple times when I found myself slightly confused about the plot or even when the film uses various terminologies. For the most part, we follow our leads in the present day, but we are also greeted with various and random flashbacks. Thankfully these flashbacks do give us a much greater understanding of the leads. For the sake of spoilers, I won't be discussing the characters or their performances in this review. Overall, while a new direction to the Marvel universe is pleasing, I'm not sure how I feel about this one. There's plenty of fun to see, but it requires a bit more work from its audiences than any of the previous Marvel films. It's also dialogue-heavy and, at times, slightly confusing with its story and vague directions. Again, action scenes are exciting but generally dark; otherwise, it's a great-looking film visually. Eternals is a big change, and the question is, are fans ready? For me, this film certainly warrants multiple viewing, which I hope will win me over more significantly in due time. *This review has been written for Sanity.
