Every kid has an imaginary friend. Only Elizabeth (Phoebe Cates) isn't a kid and DROP DEAD FRED (Rik Mayall) is anything but imaginary! With a haircut this bad, he has to be real - and his mischief has Elizabeth in big trouble! When she splits with her husband (Tim Matheson), Elizabeth turns to her best friend (Carrie Fisher). But it's her mom (Marsha Mason) who sends her back home where she discovers her childhood friend, Fred. Having been locking in a box for Twenty-one years Fred is bursting with enough energy to turn Elizabeth's life into a rowdy, rollicking, racy adventure!

Elizabeth (Phoebe Cates) is going through a hard time in life. Currently dealing with a marriage break-up from husband Charles (Tim Matheson) of three years, who is now claiming another woman has simply bewitched him. On top of that, her purse and car get stolen, and soon she also gets fired from her job. Feeling hurt, heartbroken, and annoyed, Elizabeth soon gets a visit from her mother (Marsha Mason), who demands Elizabeth stay with her and sleep in her old childhood bedroom. But while sleeping in her old bedroom, Elizabeth soon goes down memory lane of her childhood and even discovers an old jack in the box covered in duct tape. While trying to sleep, Elizabeth soon finds that inside the old toy box is her old imaginary friend, Drop Dead Fred (Rik Mayall). Elizabeth is rather shocked to find that her imaginary friend is, in fact, real. Fred is also filled with surprise, energy and excitement to be reunited with his old friend (even though he is grossed out by her being so older). Together the two will cause mischief and perhaps even rekindle an old friendship the two once shared. Fred is also determined to help Elizabeth with her current issues dealing with her ex-husband, Charles. Drop Dead Fred is best described as a loud comedy. The style of humour and gags here will be for a selected audience. The gags here are mostly ones about poo, snot, destroying property, Fred carrying on loudly, and slapstick violence. First watching the film at the age of nine, there were always many aspects of the film and comedy I admired. Growing up, Drop Dead Fred was a big deal to me. Over-the-top loud and gross comedies were also starting to be a big thing in cinema, and a few years later, the world would be greeted by films such as Dumb and Dumber. Rik Mayall as Drop Dead Fred is easily the film's best element. He is energetic here, and it's no surprise that he also delivers the best lines of dialogue. This film would be a major disaster if it weren't for him and his lively and over-the-top performance. Watching this film as a young boy, this film was hilarious to witness on-screen. Fred's costumes are also always lively, creative, and fun. Overall, the nine-year-old in me would have once called this a classic or a masterpiece. As a fully grown adult, I'm viewing this film differently. Rik Mayall is remains excellent as Fred and steals each scene with his loud and energetic performance. He also gets the best lines and gags, which carry the entire film. I found the other characters slightly painful and torturous watching the film now. It's still a great concept focusing on what if imaginary friends were real, and even if its comedy doesn't resonate strongly with you (or perhaps because you are just all grown up!), Drop Dead Fred is still highly creative, fun and different. * This review has been written for Sanity.
