Welcome to Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Todays do-or die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin , Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave and Amanda Wallers government techies in their ears, tracking their every move. And as always, one wrong move and they're dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself).

After the disappointment of 2016s ‘Suicide Squad’ from director David Ayer, fans were awaiting a worthy adaptation of the beloved source material. After a bit of falling out with Disney and Marvel, writer and director James Gunn (Guardians of The Galaxy Volume 1 & 2) was quickly swooped up by DC to helm a reboot of ‘Suicide Squad’ with ‘The Suicide Squad’. This time starring Idris Elba, John Cena, Margot Robbie, Sylvester Stallone, Joel Kinnaman, David Dastmalchian, and Daniela Melchoir, the story follows our group of beloved anti-heroes as they aim to unearth deadly secret hiding in a secret Maltese research station. With an impressive including new and old faces, I was very excited to see writer/director James Gunn work his magic on these oddball characters. So how was ‘the Suicide Squad’? ‘The Suicide Squad’ was exactly what I wanted it to be. Weird, offbeat, quite funny at times but also with that trademark James Gunn sentimental touch. I adored what the film was able to do with a bunch of D-grade DC characters. Gunn has a way of giving them humanity, whilst also allowing them to be quite funny and charming as well. King Shark has an incredible moment with a bunch of deadly Starfish creatures, which was hauntingly beautiful for a CGI creation to garner that sort of reaction from the audience. The film was perfectly paced, with the large-scaled action set piece at the end of the film feeling earned and justified. The action scenes were incredibly handled, with great choreography and in-camera stunt work on display. The cast is all fantastic too, with Joel Kinnaman improving as the leader of the squad Rick Flagg. Margot Robbie continues to nail the role of Harley Quinn. I thoroughly enjoyed Idris Elba as Bloodsport and thought that John Cena stole a lot of the scenes he was in as Peacemaker. The film was a pleasant surprise and exactly what I wanted. ‘The Suicide Squad’ is a well-paced, offbeat comic book film, that respects its characters in a very unique and different way. It's weird, it's funny and it has moments of sentiment that feel earned and justified. I loved this film. I am giving ‘The Suicide Squad’ a 4.5/5. After a secret specimen in a lab threatens the earth, it’s up a brand-new Suicide Squad from Belle Reve to save the day. Bloodsport (Idris Elba) has been recruited to lead the new team but declines. He naturally has a change of heart when he speaks to his daughter and learns of Amanda Waller’s (Viola Davies) plans if he doesn’t lead the team. He accepts, feeling he has no choice and is soon introduced to several strange villains he will lead into combat. Their destination is on the island of Corto Maltese. This new squad will be dropped off at a remote spot before they journey into enemy territory. The question is, can this group of misfits save the world from disaster? To my surprise, the film successfully reintroduces some characters from the previous instalment and some fun new ones. Not only are there plenty of characters within the film, but the actors selected to play them all are also great. Idris Elba is a solid highlight in his portrayal of the leading character Bloodsport, and the actor fits well into this world of crazy villains. Other worthy performances include John Cena, who plays Peacemaker, and Margot Robbie returning as Harley Quinn. Margot again doesn’t disappoint fans, proving once again that she was born to play the role. Overall, The Suicide Squad is loaded with blood, gore, fun, and the film is rather unpredictable right from the start. The plot is fresh, and the large stack of on-screen characters are all entertaining. Audio and Visual aspects don’t disappoint. Director James Gunn has certainly yet again delivered a film that will leave movie lovers feeling rather entertained. * This review has been written for Sanity.
