Will (Winston Duke) spends his days in a remote outpost watching the live Point of View (POV) on TV's of people going about their lives, until one subject perishes, leaving a vacancy for a new life on earth. Soon, several candidates -- unborn souls -- arrive at Will's to undergo tests determining their fitness, facing oblivion when they are deemed unsuitable. But Will soon faces his own existential challenge in the form of free-spirited Emma (Zazie Beetz), a candidate who is not like the others, forcing him to turn within and reckon with his own tumultuous past. Fueled by unexpected power, he discovers a bold new path forward in his own life. Making his feature-film debut after a series of highly acclaimed and award-winning short films and music videos, Japanese Brazilian director Edson Oda delivers a heartfelt and meditative vision of human souls in limbo, aching to be born against unimaginable odds, yet hindered by forces beyond their will.

PRODUCT REVIEWS

Set in a time and place within the afterlife, Will (Winston Duke) spends each day viewing the many lives of people on Earth on a stack of old tube TVs. When one of the TVs loses signal, it's up to Will to seek someone to replace the person lost. Will starts an interview process with five different people, one of whom will take place in the disconnected TV. The interview process will take exactly nine days, and only one from the five souls he is interviewing will be given the opportunity of a new life on Earth. As for those who are unsuccessful, they will sadly disappear and become no more. As the process begins, we are introduced to several characters who differ from one another. The questions that Will sets for the group are always unpredictable but important to the selection process. Will's methods include various deep questioning or tasks that must be completed. Naturally, once our group of five was introduced, I found myself highly invested, wanting to know how this film would end. Nine Days is dialogue-driven, and at times, I felt like I was watching a stage play on screen. The dialogue of every character feels real. The pacing of discussions is great, and it was fun to see how different each character interacts with Will. Whenever Will interacts with someone, the outcome of their time together is, again, always unpredictable. The film's visuals are amazing to watch. Nothing on screen was ever dull. There are plenty of highly creative scenes that only enhance the heartfelt emotions and assist with the film's general 'wow' factor. Overall, after seeing Nine Days, I was genuinely left speechless. It is a touching and heartfelt film. With wonderful cinematography and a touching musical score along with tremendous performance by the entire cast. This film may perhaps be the best movie I have seen in years. Masterpiece! *This review has been written by Sanity.
