Many fans of the Marvel Universe films had demanded that actress Scarlett Johansson get her own solo film as Black Widow. This film will not disappoint as it reveals a part of Natasha's life that's been obscured for many years. It's a real pity the Covid Pandemic denied this film the theatrical release it deserved. The Blu-ray edition offers some nice extra features, i.e. behind the scenes clips and an introduction by the director, Cate Shortland. But as someone who currently has a 2.1 Hi-Fi stereo setup its default DTS surround sound settings don't fit well. I do recommend this be played on at least a 5.1 surround system.

Set between the film’s Captain America: Civil War and Avengers Infinity War, Black Widow (2021) follows Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), who is now on the run. While she manages to find a place to hide and lay low, she soon receives word of a situation related to her dark and haunted past, when as a young girl, Natasha was forced to be transformed into an ultimate operative. Now, conducting her own investigation and being hunted by an unknown masked threat, she finds herself in a new mystery that could be connected to her personal upbringing. All Natasha wanted to do was hide, but now she is forced back into action and is forced to deal with certain matters from her past. Thankfully, this movie brings a greater understanding of her past, especially regarding her family and even her upbringing as a secret spy. I found the start had moments that felt slightly vague relating to the plot, but the film improves far greater as it moves forward. Like most Marvel films, Black Widow contains moments of jaw-dropping action and the film here attempts to focus more on drama along with the mystery aspect. Natasha's past is filled with hurt and suffering, which she has never had an opportunity to deal with until now, and the film is loaded with touching and compelling moments. Some mysteries are obvious here, but it's still fun to see them unfold. Actor David Harbour was brilliant as the film's funny man and providing the majority of the film’s laughs. Performances from Scarlett Johansson are great, and actress Florence Pugh was also outstanding in her role. Rachel Weisz, as always, is just wonderful on-screen. Overall, this is a solid instalment to the Marvel universe. Some plot details do feel slightly vague during the film's opening, but thankfully this improves as the film progresses further. Action is awesome, and the film’s musical score also is pleasing. As a Marvel film, I feel many will certainly be pleased with this new and exciting instalment. *This review has been written for Sanity.
