Michael (Ryan Reynolds) was once known as an excellent and highly skilled bodyguard; well, that was until he was the bodyguard for a hitman named Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson). After the events of the previous film, The Hitman's Bodyguard (2017), Michael is quite sad and now has haunting nightmares, to the point that Darius himself is even appearing in his dreams! Having lost his bodyguard rating, Michael is told to give up bodyguarding and take a break as perhaps he will find some peace while getting some sun. While Michael accepts taking a break and tries to move forward, it's not long until Darius's wife hunts him down. Sonia Kincaid (Salma Hayek) interrupts Michael's holiday and pushes him back into action and on the run. Sonia tells Michael that Darius (Samuel L. Jackson) has been kidnapped and has requested the help of Michael to rescue him. Now Michael feels he has a purpose once again as he becomes a bodyguard for the hitman's wife. There's just one problem: Michael will not kill anyone or even carry a handgun. For the record, I had a great time watching the first instalment featured back in 2017. It was a fun film with good chemistry between actors Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson, and I enjoyed Salma Hayek's appearance. Thankfully, we see the whole crew returning this time around, with actress Salma Hayek gaining more screen presence than I expected. Once again, our leads work wonderfully together and deliver plenty of shocking and witty dialogue, which works well for most of the film. Action sequences again are pleasing and brainless. Overall, it's welcoming to see the leading cast back together in this unexpected sequel, and the absurd amount of rude dialogue is also welcomed. The plot is certainly a step down from the previous film but there’s still plenty of enjoyment to be had. Fans of the previous movie will still have an excellent and brainless time with this instalment. *This review has been written for Sanity. Hollywood loves sequels. If a film performs well, you can almost guarantee it is going to get a follow-up. After the immense success of ‘The Hitman’s Bodyguard’ back in 2017, it was only a matter of time before we got a sequel and now in 2021 we have. Another victim of the COVID-19 pandemic, ‘The Hitman’s Wife's Bodyguard’ was originally slated for a 2020 release, but due to the pandemic, the film was pushed back until June 2021. And now here we are in August and the film has finally got a Blu-ray and DVD release here in Australia. The film once again stars Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson and Salma Hayek and follows the world's most lethal odd couple -- bodyguard Michael Bryce (Reynolds) and hit man Darius Kincaid (Jackson) are back for another life-threatening mission. Still unlicensed and under scrutiny, Bryce is forced into action by Darius's even more volatile wife (Hayek). Soon, all three are in over their heads when a madman's sinister plot threatens to leave Europe in total chaos. With a fun premise and a likable cast, I was excited to see the exploits of this unlikely trio once again. So how was ‘The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard’? I Found this film to be immensely entertaining. The film benefits from its amazing cast, with Reynold and Jackson proving once again that they have undeniable chemistry. But the film is made by Hayek’s over-the-top performance as Jackson’s on-screen wife Sonia Kincaid. She is funny, crazy and so damn likeable in the role. Director Patrick Hughes returns to helm this sequel as well and I think the director does a great job blending both the action and the comedy, creating great action set-pieces and funny, over-the-top sequences as well. I loved the way the film balanced a lot of these sequences normally at the same time. We have a heart-pounding action set-piece but with the added comedy musings of its cast. It is a great blend and works really well in the film. The film isn’t going to convert people who didn’t like the first film as it is much of the same, but if you were a fan of the first film than this one is for you. With a great blend of action and comedy and great chemistry between the films dynamic cast, I had a blast. I am giving ‘the Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard’ a 3/5.
