The most immediately striking thing about Big Grandfather is how calm and deliberate it is. There's stillness and a rhythmic surety here. Where the Hip Bone Connection presented a personal shifting, struggling to get a toe hold, a man donning a suit of armour in order to go into the battle to make sense of it all, Little Carlos was a spear pitched in that battle. Big Grandfather then, is the headdress thrown into the air when the battle is done. Knock on the doors of Tom Waits and Rickie Lee Jones and you'll find spiritual partners for Big Grandfather. Surprising and superb.
