Felix (Robert Mitchum) and Tony (Jack Lemmon) are best friends, and together, they own a boat in which they earn money to transport passengers. Soon, the pair is given an opportunity, with high risk, to transport a beautiful woman named Irena (Rita Hayworth) across the seas without detection. They pair haggle their fee and soon accept the job. However, both men feel different than average at sea and are more distracted than usual. Perhaps the new presence of Irena is causing their temperatures to rise more than usual. Delivering fine performances and a mixed genre of drama and romance, Fire Down Below is a slow-paced film that sadly drags far much with its story (even more so in the third act). The romance aspect is a nice touch, particularly for the character of Felix, who refuses to fall in love or lose focus. Still, naturally, his heart begins to change once he starts to interact with his newest passenger. In the end, it's a fine film, but I had hoped for something better, especially with its pace and actor Jack Lemmon also feels underused here, given his talent and skill usually shown on-screen. * This review has been written for Sanity.
