PRODUCT REVIEWS

Set in the 1980s, the film once again follows Diana (Gal Gadot), who currently works as an anthropologist at the Smithsonian Institution. Each day, she continues to mourn the loss of Steve (Chris Pine) and continues to save those in need. However, when a businessman, Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal), discovers an ancient artifact with magical powers, he decides to use it for personal gain, which puts the entire world in chaos. Diana must confront her past and the consequences to stop Maxwell while also facing a new adversary, Cheetah (Kristen Wiig). Visually, Wonder Woman 1984 is a delight, and the setting of the 80's is also a welcoming backdrop for this superhero. For the most part, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman is also acceptable here. However, the story keeps this film from being more impactful and fun. Pacing is also questionable and inconsistent. It's an OK addition to the DC Universe, but sadly audiences will leave "wishing" it was far more significant. * This review has been written for Sanity. The future of the DC Cinematic Universe (DCU) has been up in the air for a couple of years now, with many of the slated releases no longer on the release schedule. However, ‘Wonder Woman’ has been a huge hit for the studio, so naturally, a sequel was bound to happen. As the ‘Wonder Woman’ films have existed as prequels to the other DCU titles, this has worked well for the studio, and in 2020 we finally got ‘Wonder Woman1984’. ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ follows Diana must contend with a work colleague and businessman, whose desire for extreme wealth sends the world down a path of destruction, after an ancient artifact that grants wishes go missing. So how was ‘Wonder Woman 1984’? This film was a pleasant surprise. As someone who loves comic books and comic book films, there have been a few missteps in recent years. However, ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ manages to keep the tone of the first film, grounding the premise of the film in reality, whilst also possessing many of the fun comic book action set pieces we have come to love from the studio. Gal Gadot is once again the best part of the film. She is absolutely fantastic as Diana Prince, selling the physicality of the role as well as the emotional sequences as well. Pedro Pascal plays our lead villain Maxwell Lord. He is fantastic as well, giving a truly menacing performance, whilst also providing a few moments of levity as well. Director Patty Jenkins has also taken on writing duties for the sequel as well. Jenkins does a great job of exploring some of Wonder Woman’s rogue’s gallery by introducing Kristen Wiig’s ‘Barbara Minerva’ aka Cheetah. Wiig is great in the film, showcasing her wide range of talent as both a comedic actor but also a dramatic actor as well. ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ is the perfect sequel to the 2017 film. Providing fans with more of what they loved in the first film. Gadot is fantastic again as the title character. This was a great sequel, and I had a lot of fun with it. I am giving this one a 3.5/5.
