Return of the king extended version - first disc freeze at 41:40 and 47:10 but there is no scratch or anything like that.

If you’re a fan of director Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings films, and you’re anything like me, you’ve probably already purchased several versions of them on disc. I own the original Theatrical Cut DVDs, plus the Extended Edition DVD sets, and also the Limited Edition DVDs. On top of that, I have the Theatrical and Extended Editions on Blu-ray Disc. And now, in a new format 4K Ultra HD. All three films, with both the Theatrical Cut and Extended Edition versions, newly-remastered by Jackson in 4K resolution with better detail, better colour, and better contrast than any version you’ve seen before. There are no extras whatsoever in this set, not even audio commentaries. A worthy loss though, because seeing these films in their glorious remastered look is truly like seeing the film again for the very first time. An absolute MUST HAVE.

Without question - the best 4K remaster of anything ever (YET). With new 4K scans of the original film stock, AND upscale VFX work from a Weta Digital - Peter Jackson’s trilogy of masterpieces has never looked or sounded better. A masterclass in filmmaking and the greatest trilogy of all-time, you’re doing yourself a massive disservice if you don’t pick these up.

Absolutely incredible, the most amazing 4K remaster of anything to date and on top of that improved audio, will be rewatching this frequently. NOTE: Does not include any special features atleast on the extended edition discs.

When Frodo inherited all from his Uncle Bilbo, the last thing he expected was to embark on an adventure. But the inheritance of a mysterious ring from his Uncle Bilbo does exactly that- it sends Frodo onto “The Road [that] goes ever on and on down from the door where it began.”. This “nasty disturbing uncomfortable” adventure is told over three fantastic movies taken from the books by J. R. Tolkien- The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King. Sweeping the Oscars clean in 2004, winning 11 Oscars, the trilogy tells a compelling story. With clever screenplay by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens and Peter Jackson, we are taken to various locations and interact with various people. Our principal characters are the 4 Hobbits; Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin; the two humans Boromir and Strider; a dwarf Gimli; an elf Legolas; and the wizard Gandalf. Whilst these 9 begin their adventure together, they are split apart and take off on quests in smaller groups across the trilogy. The interweaving of these adventures and the way they are integrated together is one of the film's highlights. The acting within this film is one of the indubitable strengths. Andy Serkis’ brilliant representation of Gollum has propelled this character’s struggle with right and wrong into mainstream culture. Filled with a large cast, there is not a weak performance across the trilogy. Visually these films are stunning. Full of beautiful costumes, gorgeous cinematography, fabulous scenery and excellent special effects, these films have lasted the test of time. Upgraded to 4K, they look and sound wonderful. The sweeping soundtrack full of themes by Howard Shore is memorable and creates atmosphere. Overall, even if you are not a fan of fantasy, there is plenty within this trilogy to enjoy. With beautiful cinematography, fantastic locations, excellent directing and acting, outstanding special effects and admirable screenplay, each of the films within the trilogy are worthy of a watch. Be prepared to settle in for the duration, though- once you start, you won’t wish to stop! This review has been written for Sanity.
