Time Runs Out

John David Washington is the new Protagonist in Christopher Nolan's original sci-fi action spectacle Tenet. Armed with only one word - Tenet - and fighting for the survival of the entire world, the Protagonist journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that will unfold in something beyond real time. Not time travel. Inversion.

Throughout the film, we follow a man who is called 'The Protagonist' (John David Washington), who is an ex-CIA agent. After a secret mission turns into chaos, our lead is invited to join a top-secret group known as Tenet. While working for Tenet, it is up to The Protagonist to save the world and make fresh discoveries surrounding time. Thankfully, our hero is not alone, and he is joined by Neil (Robert Pattinson), who is equipped with exciting skills set and knowledge. Visually, Tenet is an absolute masterpiece. Once again, director Christopher Nolan brings a film loaded with many sequences which I promise will leave you feeling shocked and surprised. Overall, Tenet is a beautiful film. Visually this film is impressive as it provides some new and creative action sequences, unlike anything I've witnessed in cinema. Director Christopher Nolan has made many new and exciting choices in this film which will either please or disappoint. The plot is undoubtedly somewhat complicated and requires your full attention when viewing. Opinions and thoughts will differ even after a second or perhaps third viewing. The film's soundtrack is outstanding, and right now it's one of my favourites. In the end, can I explain and confidently understand everything I saw in this film upon my viewing? The honest answer from me is nope. But the film has stayed with me, and I found myself processing many of the details of the film. No matter what, I did still enjoy this film a fair bit, and the overall experience here is excellent! *This review has been written for Sanity. Christopher Nolan has become one of Hollywood’s most inventive and creative filmmakers. Nolan’s style of grit and realism really lends itself to some of the best and most inventive films of the modern era. Giving us classics, yes classics, such as: ‘Inception’, ‘Momento’, ‘The Prestige’, ‘The Dark Knight Trilogy’, ‘Interstellar’, ‘Dunkirk’ and ‘Insomnia’. In 2020, arguably Nolan’s most ambitious project was released into theatres and now on 4K UHD and Blu-Ray ‘Tenet’. Armed with only one word, Tenet, and fighting for the survival of the entire world, a Protagonist (played by John David Washington) journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that will unfold in something beyond real-time. With an impressive cast led by the talented John David Washington (son of Academy Award winner Denzel Washington) and co-starring Robert Pattinson and Kenneth Branagh and Nolan at the helm, ‘Tenet’ was my most anticipated film of 2020. With all of that said, how did ‘Tenet’ turn out? ‘Tenet’ is a directorial masterclass. Nolan has crafted a near-perfect film on a technical level. The film is utterly gorgeous to look at with impressive visual effects and a great mix of sound and visual flair. The film utilises its gorgeous locations to its advantage, providing the audience with a story that allows these locations to feel real, lived in and a player in the overall story. The story itself requires your complete attention. You need to be watching the film closely to really grasp what is going on. This is not a detriment to the film, this is exactly how Nolan intended it. As I am writing this review, I have seen ‘Tenet’ twice and yet I feel like upon more viewings I will be able to fully grasp the story and find all the little nuggets f information that I may have missed. The cast is all fantastic as well, with Robert Pattinson stealing nearly every scene he is in as Neil. He is witty, charming and has great screen presence. John David Washington is very good as well as the suitably named ‘The Protagonist’. We see the world of ‘Tenet’ through his eyes which works very well for the story. Branaugh is great as well as the film's villain. He is menacing and downright cruel which is exactly what you want in a villain. All-in-all ‘Tenet’ is impressive, well-crafted and near flawlessly executed. I had a blast exploring this world and cannot wait to watch it again. I am giving ‘Tenet’ a 4.5/5. Pick up your copy today on 4K UHD and Blu-Ray, you will not be disappointed! Christopher Pattison wrote this movie review for Sanity.
