Disney has found recent success for making live-action adaptations with ‘The Jungle Book’, ‘The Lion King’ and ‘Beauty and The Beast’ just to name a few. In 2020, ‘Mulan’ was meant to be released in theatres but due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the film was released directly to Disney’s streaming service ‘Disney+’. But in November, Disney have surprised audiences by releasing the film on 4K UHD, Blu-Ray and DVD! As a huge fan of ‘Mulan’ this was one live-action adaptation I was very excited to check-out. For those who do not know the story, ‘Mulan’ follows a young Chinese maiden, Mulan (played by Yifei Lui), who disguises herself as a male warrior in order to save her father. So, with grand action-sequences, that Disney magic we all know and love and a respect and appreciation for Chinese mythology and folklore, I was quite excited to see this adaptation of the classic ‘Mulan’ tale. So how was the live-action adaptation of ‘Mulan’? ‘Mulan’ was grand, epic, and astonishing. The film is filled with gorgeous imagery, fantastic, grand scenery and epic battle sequences that are truly grand in scale and breathtaking in execution. The film has a great sense of scale, which for a period, war, epic, which is what this film is at heart, it needs to have a sense of what makes it work. The cast are all fantastic, huge props to Disney for its casting choices, they have done a great job. It was fantastic seeing martial arts legends, Donnie Yen as Commander Tung and Jet Li as the Emperor. It was fantastic seeing both of these action heavyweights in the same film together. Yifei Lui is also wonderful in the film, she sells the central drama and conflict of the film whilst also selling the physicality that the role demands. ‘Mulan’ was a fantastic live-action remake of an animated classic. The film does tell its story differently which will appease moviegoers, but the film possesses much of the sentiment and heart that the original film held, which will please Disney fans as well. I had a great time with this film and was very happy to see it get a physical release as well. I am giving ‘Mulan’ (2020) an 8/10. Based on a true story along with the Disney Animation which featured back in 1998. The film begins with a little Chinese girl named Mulan. Mulan is known for making mischievous trouble within her community. Now an adult, Mulan continues to cause her family embarrassing moments even though Mulan's actions were somewhat accidental with positive intentions behind them. Her father is concerned about Mulan and does not know what lies within her future. Soon Mulan's community hear about a new threat. To take on this new threat, a male adult from each family is required to leave their home and fight. Mulan's father has already served previously and can barely fight in battles. To save his life, Mulan decides to take her father's place by disguising herself as a heroic male warrior. Mulan is now hiding a huge secret which could cost her life. She attempts to blend in as training begins, but little does Mulan know; she has a secret power within her which is yet to be unlocked. The visuals of Mulan are quite remarkable, which is never a surprise as a Disney film. Action sequences were also great. The film's plot for the most part is also solid, and thankfully this feature tries to be different to the animation which originally featured in 1998. Fans of the animation will find it hard not to compare this film to what they have grown up with. I feel performances were also cheerful, and even side performances also receive my praise. Overall, I am pleased at how Disney attempted to create a remake that tries to be different from its original cartoon. Visuals are quite lively, and the film's action sequences also provide fun. If you are like me and loved the original animation, many will find it hard not to compare, especially when it comes to some of the changes in the film's plot or characters. In the end, I am still thankful that Disney attempted to make a film that was not a complete copy. When it comes to live-action remakes, the results were indeed positive to see.
