To be clear, there’s nothing ordinary about Brett Goldsmith’s life, and there’s nothing ordinary about the music he makes. A musical testament to his many creative lives and influences, Goldsmith’s debut album Ordinary Life is the culmination of a life’s work. Raised in the thick of his father’s nightclub empire, best known for Melbourne institutions Redheads, Seven and the iconic Saratoga, Goldsmith’s jet-set youth was spent playing bass guitar for rock legend James Reyne and touring, producing and playing on Platinum records for his Aunt, Olivia Newton-John & pop sensation Chantoozies. From talented writer, musician and producer to more recently a highly successful fashion & street photographer, Goldsmith makes creativity look easy. However, Ordinary Life is less inspired by his unconventional youth and 24-hour, urban lifestyle and more by a simple deeply held belief, “That every one of us can reinvent ourselves without fear, no matter how great the challenge.” Recorded and produced from the solitude of his family home in rural Victoria, The result is a reflective, intimate and brutally honest work featuring lyrics about love, loss and tragedy. “I woke up one morning with an overwhelming desire to escape and get back to a place where it was about simple truth and beauty,” explains Goldsmith. “Ordinary Life is definitely inspired by the people I have loved and lost, and a few observations I’ve made along the way.’ With a sound and lyrics that recall musical greats Crowded House, John Mayer and cult favorites Death Cab for Cutie, music writer Andrew Watt says it best. “Ordinary Life is a thoroughly modern work, combining intimate, evocative vocals, sweeping panoramic production, exquisite pop melodies and some revealing, sometimes disturbing lyrics. ” In addition to the release and promotion of his debut album Goldsmith has also recently written and produced Olivia Newton-John’s forthcoming EP and is set to play shows in Melbourne and Sydney.
