PRODUCT REVIEWS

Joseph Haydn (in full Franz Joseph Haydn although Franz is never used) was a prolific Austrian composer living between 1732 and 1809. Haydn wrote over one hundred symphonies and number 94 and 101 are featured on this CD. Symphony 94 in G major is more familiar to many as the 'Surprise' symphony. The reason for this name becomes obvious part way through the second movement (Andante - track 2). There are a number of stories as to when and why Haydn wrote this piece, so friend readers, I will leave you to research the story and select the one you like the best. Notably there is a little melody that runs through this movement and it is almost guaranteed to leave you with an 'earworm' that will last for some time. The next symphony we hear is his Symphony 101 in D major and this is more familiar to many as the 'Clock' symphony. This feature becomes very evident in the second movement ( Andante - track 6) when the beat of a clock runs through the music. The last track on this Cd is Brahms Variations on a Theme by Haydn. Overall, as typical of the Decca Eloquence label, it is well recorded with good similar volume level for each track. Most playings of this CD will just give you music of pleasant listening. However sometimes, given the right circumstances, a wicked joke can be unleashed on an unexpecting listener...thanks to Mr. Haydn.s famous surprise.
