The early morning tranquillity of a diner is shattered when a lone gunman opens fire. The survivors include Carla (Kate Beckinsale), a waitress struggling to cope with being a single mum; 13-year-old Anne (Dakota Fanning), who turns to God to explain the murder of her father; Dr. Bruce Laraby (Guy Pearce) who suffers a loss of confidence, with devastating implications; and Charlie Archenault and his daughter Kathy (Academy Award winners Forest Whitaker* and Jennifer Hudson**) who must confront his compulsive gambling habit in order to repair their relationship. As the survivors try to rebuild their lives, they find themselves transforming in the most unexpected ways.
