If Neil Murray is one of those artists who goes to the heart of his nation's drama and keeps walking in an individual way. Murray is best known for his Warumpi Band years and his autobiographical novel from that time, "Sing For Me Countryman", is an Australian classic. But he didn't stop being a songman. His exposure to traditional Aboriginal culture led him, like a rainbow, back to the place he was from - Lake Bolac in western Victoria. In "Dust", his first album after his return, he sang up the spirits of the place. His place. Domestic politics of the most intense kind mark his next album, "The Wondering Kind". He's known the sadness of being separated from his kids but he still writes happy songs like "Good Light In Broome". His album, "Going the Distance - "Myall Creek" records, ever so delicately, a moment of true reconciliation. "Tom Wills Would" is the anthem of an Australian dissident. "High On A Hill" is the work of a mature artist asking questions about mortality. "Overnighter" has "Lights of Hay", a song as deep as "High On A Hill", about a man driving at night wondering if he's ever going to get there. Neil Murray's art is an odyssey. And along the way, with My Island Home, he wrote a national anthem.
