Ringing the Bell Backwards is a collection of European folk and popular songs of the 1930s and 40s, radically rearranged by Paul Grabowsky. Evoking memories not only of Piaf, Lynn, Dietrich but also of an era; of a world tearing itself a apart in conflicts of huge and terrible ideas, this is new music arising from the memory of the old. It is a statement about love and war, about the legacy of Fascism and the unquenchable spirit of the individual. First recorded in 1994, this is the newly remastered version of the work that launched the Australian Art Orchestra all those years ago.
