Lutenist Nigel North teams up with soprano Monika Mauch for a trapse through the legendary lute songbook compiled by Robert Dowland (son of the famous composer and lutenist John Dowland), published in 1610. The anthology (titled A Musical Banquet) gathered and collated songs from England, France, Italy and Spain, making it a uniquely multicultural tome. German soprano Mauch is no stranger to music of this period, having previously worked alongside The Hilliard Ensemble and proving herself as an internationally renowned specialist in early music. Given how subtle he sounds in the mix, North's performance might be easy to take for granted, but his incredibly clean, meticulous technique is something to be admired, and it contributes to the overall elegance of this album, which permits a fascinating game of compare and contrast between the different strands of lute music popular in Western Europe in the late 16th and early 17th centuries.
