Mario Frangoulis presents a tribute to the famous tenor of the 50s, Mario Lanza. Mario Lanza was one of the greatest tenors of the 20th century. He was very successful in the 40s and 50s and he introduced classic songs to a wide audience. His career included timeless recordings, and he also participated in many musicals of that time. A highlight of his participation in such productions was the film “The Great Caruso”, which established him as “The American Caruso”.
Mario Frangoulis believes that Mario Lanza is “a formidable artist - the 1st classical crossover
tenor, whose talent and passion for singing influenced many opera singers, like Jose Carreras.
Mario Frangoulis, after two years of studying Lanza’s repertoire and in close co-operation with
the tenor’s family, gave two concerts with Lanza’s repertoire: at Moscow and at The Theatre of
Herodes Atticus in Athens, with the famous Russian Orchestra, OSSIPOV.
Following the tradition of the top tenors Mario Frangoulis passionately performs Napolitano
canzonets. Orchestra OSSIPOV, is considered to be one of the finest of the genre worldwide
with a distinctive characteristic of inlaying balalaikas.
The Conductor is Vladimir Ponkin. Famous New-Zealand soprano Hayley Westenra and
exceptional Greek tenor George Misailides are participating. A unique musical journey in Mario Lanza’s Italy, through the passionate performances of Mario Frangoulis.
