Waiting to Exhale is a 1995 movie directed by Forest Whitaker. The movie was adapted from the novel of the same name by Terry McMillan and stars Whitney Houston, Angela Bassett, Lela Rochon and Loretta Devine. The story centers on four successful African-American women and their relationships with men and one another.

Released in 1995, the soundtrack became a huge hit featuring appearances by some of the biggest names in the industry, including Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, Aretha Franklin, and Patti LaBelle. The album remained at number one on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart for five weeks, and has sold over ten million copies to date, and provides major hits in the #1 single "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)", the #2 hits "Sittin' Up In My Room" and "Not Gon' Cry" and the #8 hit "Count On Me". All songs were written and produced by Babyface, except for "My Funny Valentine" by Chaka Khan.
