Celebrating its Iron-anniversary, Game of Thrones is still one of pop culture’s heavyweights. Spanning 8 seasons, the show has dominated the silver screen, but now that it is finished, do people still care? Today I will be breaking down why you need to watch Game of Thrones or for the case of many, why you need to RE-watch Game of Thrones. So let's get stuck into it.
The characters – one thing that remained true until the end was the characters of the show. With the likes of Jamie Lannister, Tryian Lannister, Jon Snow, Daenerys Targarian, Sansa Stark, and Arya Stark just to name a few. These characters are so well developed, so well performed and so well realised, that they transcend the silver screen to be among the best of all time. These characters all have complete arcs and deliver some of the show's best sequences. I have always been a Tyrian guy myself. Peter Dinklage is a revelation in this role, making you feel every emotion throughout the course of the show. So, whether you love Jon Snow or Jamie Lannister, there is a character that you will be able to engage with.
The action – the show has some of the best battle sequences of all time. Who can forget the amazing Battle at Blackwater from Season 2 or my personal favourite Battle of The Bastards from Season 6. The action is superbly helmed, with each action sequence having weight to it. The outcome of each conflict always had major consequences on the course of the show, you really didn’t know which of the characters was going to make it to the next episode. This made each and every action sequence tense, nail-biting and oh so satisfying.
The Dragons – this one is quite specific but who doesn’t love seeing a dragon bought to life. Daenery’s three dragon babies, Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion were all memorable and the artistic design of each of these winged creatures was superb. Seeing them take flight is still among some of the best special effects ever put on screen.
The music – this again is quite specific, but the music from the show is superb. Whether it was the show's theme, or just some of the musical pieces from throughout the show, composer Ramin Djawadi understood the tone of the show and knew exactly when to use the appropriate music. The theme from the end of the episode ‘The Long Night’ is still one of my personal favourite scores of all time. I absolutely adore it and find myself listening to it quite regularly.
By now you probably have seen Game of Thrones, but you should be watching it again. The show is fantastic and is filled with memorable moments, characters, and some of the best special effects ever put on screen. What better time to revisit the show than on the show's iron anniversary. Pick up the complete series now on DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K UHD from your local Sanity or online.
