The Jurassic World franchise has been one of Hollywood’s biggest franchises in recent years making over $3 billion worldwide. I have had a great time with the franchise, whilst at times it does become a little silly, overall, the franchise has a great sense of fun and has maintained this sense of fun and wonderment for nearly 30 years. From ground-breaking effects, to endearing characters, to the conversation between man-made creation vs the natural order, all of this combines for one of cinema’s greatest franchises. To celebrate ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’s release on physical media this month, it's time to break down the three best moments across the new trilogy. There are plenty to choose from, but these are my picks for the best moments in this recent trilogy. The picks will be from 2015’s Jurassic World, 2018s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and 2022s Jurassic World: Dominion. So, without further ado, let's get stuck in!
T-Rex vs Indominous Rex (Jurassic World – 2015) – One of the highlights of the Jurassic franchise (World or Park) has been the impressive visual effects. Each film seems to up the ante with amazing visuals from film to film. One of the best visual showcases of this across all of the films, was the Indominous Rex vs T-Rex fight in the third act/climax of Jurassic World. This moment is exactly what Jurassic fans were after when this film was announced. The fight is amazing, showcasing the incredible visuals whilst also showcasing the brute force of these prehistoric beasts. The genetically modified Indominous Rex goes toe-to-toe with the T-Rex, delivering blow after blow, before the T-Rex enlists the help of Blue the Raptor. The two gang-up on the genetic creation, which sees the Indominous Rex meet its demise at the hands of a Mosasaurus that drags the creature to the ocean’s depths. The fight is a lot of fun and one of the highlights of the trilogy.
Opening Sequence (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom – 2018) – The Jurassic franchise has always prided itself on its ability to shock audiences. The opening sequence in ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ sees researchers from the company in-gen attempting to retrieve genetic materials from the Indominous Rex which now lies at the floor of the ocean Its raining and there are dinosaurs are on the loose, so the team want to get in quick and get this done. Director J.A Bayona uses his horror background (having directed ‘Orphanage’) to create a truly terrifying sequence, using shadows to tell the story, with the threat of the T-rex kept largely within the shadows before the creature reveals himself. It’s a great sequence, which also sees the return of the Mosasaurus which is by far, one of the best dinosaurs in the franchise.
Heroes escape (Jurassic World: Dominion – 2022) – ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ has a lot of memorable moments, including another Mosasaurus sequence which sees a deep-sea fishing boat overturned because of the monstrous fish. But my pick from the third film in the trilogy comes from our heroes new and old escaping the series' latest threat, the Giganotosaurus. We see Owen (Chris Pratt), Claire (Bryce Dallas-Howard), Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), Allen Grant (Sam Neil) and Ellie Sadler (Laura Dern) escaping from the Giganotosaurus in the film's third act. The sequence is riveting but also full of fun, with the characters from both trilogies merging, to beat this threat together. It’s a great sequence and remains my favourite of the third film in the trilogy.
The Jurassic World trilogy has been an absolute blast and it is sad to think it has come to an end. Over the three films we have received dinosaur fights, that far exceed what we have ever seen before from the franchise. The visuals effects have reached their peak and they are all incredible.
