Luke Hemmings - When Facing The Things We Turn Away From Album Review

Beginning a new chapter in his creative journey, Luke Hemmings has launched a solo project that has allowed him to introspectively explore his coming-of-age moments in an authentic and deep-dive manner. The lead singer of 5 Seconds Of Summer has decided to take less of a hook driven approach with his debut solo album, and instead focus on his storytelling. ‘When Facing The Things We Turn Away From’ is a perfect example of why creative release is so important as it soaks itself in intimacy and creates a freeing release of emotions.

Led by live instrumentation, this album sonically feels majorly inspired by Gangs Of Youth from the cinematic inspired instrumentals to the detailed lyrics encouraging an immersive listen. Lead single and opening track ‘Starting Line’ beautifully set the foundations for what this project embodies and throughout the 12 track duration you will find yourself getting swept up in the beauty of it.

‘Saigon’ is an early and clear standout with its dreamy pop-rock production that is complimented by smooth synths and the title lyrics “when facing the things we turn away from” echoing in your head so simply. ‘Baby Blue’ continues that sonic while other stand outs like ‘Repeat’ and ‘Slip Away’ introduce a more stripped back approach with his crisp vocals taking charge.

But it’s the track ‘Mum’ that really impresses with its slow-burning production that grows throughout the duration and has this contrast of vulnerability and anthemic arena-rock. Playing as a commentary on all the times he didn’t call home in his teenage years while he was on the road, he apologises to his mum and acknowledges that he won’t get that time back. It’s honestly the perfect example of the vision Hemmings has for this project, and feels like a poignant centre-piece to the whole record.
