John Mayer - Sob Rock Album Review

John Mayer - Sob Rock Album Review

John Mayer is the king of “sob rock” so it only seems fitting that he embraced it for his eight studio album. ‘Sob Rock’ is a short, punchy, honest, and vulnerable body of work that hears the singer, songwriter and producer giving listeners 10 songs of classic John Mayer introspection.

There is genuinely a song on this album for everyone who has ever enjoyed a John Mayer song in the past. Opening track ‘Last Train Home’ is a homage to his blues roots and classic Americana which he’s indulged in over his 20 year career. While ‘Til The Right One Comes’ is more intended for fans of the hook woven ballads with a guitar blues twist. But then you have the lead single ‘New Light’ which is heavily cemented in the current moment which is very reminiscent of James Bay’s last record ‘Electric Light’ with its similar organic groove.

Capturing a whole lot of emotions and distinct feelings, there are moments of tenderness which are harnessed in ‘Shouldn’t Matter But It Does’, and there is also a sense of nostalgia in songs like ‘Shot in The Dark’ which are very warm and comforting. And I would say that is another great way to describe this album because John Mayer has this organic ability to drop your wall and allow yourself to feel emotional but not necessarily triggered.
