After the massive success of the first two films In the Kingsman franchise, it was only a matter of time before we were going to get a new instalment and then in early 2020 we got a trailer for ‘The Kings Man’ a prequel, promising to tell us the origin story of the secret spy agency. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic saw the delay of this film, but thankfully in January of 2022, we finally got to see it and now ‘the Kings Man’ has made its way to Blu-Ray and DVD. I am a huge fan of the first two films and was incredibly excited for this instalment and I am happy to say that it lived up to my high-expectations, providing a meaningful story with great characters. Today I am going to give you 3 reasons why you should pick-up this one on Blu-ray and/or DVD today! So without further ado, here are the three reasons why you need ‘The Kings Man’ in your collection.
The action – One of the hallmarks for the first two films in this franchise, is the action. Director Matthew Vaughn has a way with the camera. He uses wide shots to capture the action set-pieces using CGI to enhance the sequence rather than hinder it. The action here is fantastic with a lot of the cast including near 60 year old Ralph Fiennes, doing their own stunt work, which I always admire as it elevates the action. The set pieces are fun to, with a lot of globe trotting during World War II. We visit many locations in Europe which also makes the film feel very large in scope. The film also relies on a lot of hand-to-hand combat, rather than shooting and large scale battle sequences. This makes the stakes feel higher as you genuinely do not know if your favourite characters are going to get out of the situation alive. I enjoyed all the action in this film, which is high praise from me, as modern action movies just don’t have the grit that films like ‘The Kings Man’ have.
The acting – Writer and director Matthew Vaughn is very much so an actors director. Whilst he does a great job helming other elements of his productions, he does a great job with his cast. ‘The Kings Man’ is no exception. The cast here are all fantastic with Ralph Fiennes and Rhys Ifans standing out as Orlando Oxford the founder of ‘The Kings Man’ and Grigori Rasputin, one of the films villainous characters. There are of course other great performances as well, with Gemma Arterton, Harris Dickinson, Dijmon Hounsou, Matthew Goode, Charles Dance and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. The cast all do a great job selling the action, comedy and also some of the films unexpected dramatic elements. Its both a testament to each of the performers and the man at the helm as well.
The story – One issue a lot of prequels suffer from is that they focus too heavily on the smaller, insignificant details, that they forget to tell a compelling narrative. ‘The Kings Man’, thankfully doesn’t follow this trend, putting the story first, with fun little moments throughout that fans will appreciate. You can easily watch this film, never having seen the previous films of the franchise. The story follows, one man must race against time to stop history's worst tyrants and criminal masterminds as they get together to plot a war that could wipe out millions of people and destroy humanity (provided by IMDB). This story is a lot of fun to follow as we are thrown into the mix of one of history’s greatest and most devastating conflicts, whilst also having fun with this fictional timeline. I enjoy the mixture of history and fiction, it is all blended incredibly well.
‘The Kings Man’ is one of the better prequels I have seen. Focussing more so on the characters and story than small insignificant moments. The film is filled with humour and heart and a hell of a lot of action as well. It is a testament to Matthew Vaughn, proving once again that he is one of Hollywood’s greatest filmmakers currently working today. This is a must have for fans of the original, or those just wanting a fun action/comedy. I would highly recommend this one.
